so i guess i dont like 24 3/4 scale length

hey guys I own 4 guitars and 3 of them are 25 1/4" scale length (charvel pro mod wild card #4, charvel desolation ds1, and Jackson dk2m dinky). the other guitar is a 24 3/4" scale length (washburn idol wi14). I used to like the slinky feel of the washburn until I got my Jackson. now I tend to not play the washbunr simly because the string seems to be way looser then my 25 1/4" scale guitars, and I feel like I have to chase the string across the fret board since the elliptical motion when struck is greater. my question is I usually play 10's on everything, if I put 11's on the washburn will it have similar tension to my 25 1/4" scale guitars? or would I need to really up it to 12's?

i also like 10's on 25 1/4, and for me 11's really does the trick with 24 3/4

Re: so i guess i dont like 24 3/4 scale length

I am the opposite of you, I prefer my 24.75" scale guitars over the 25.5" one. To answer your question though, 11's will tighten up the string tension and making some adjustments to your string height and neck relief might help a bit too.

Re: so i guess i dont like 24 3/4 scale length

great thanks, that will make me very happy, I know a WI14 is a pretty cheap guitar, but since it was my first when I got back into playing after a 20 absence I figured I would fix it up, did a fret job, replaced the stock pups, gutted all the wiring and rewired the whole thing. I love the unfinished neck, and the basswood body sounds great, so if the 11's will fix the slacky string feel that will be great. thanks man

I always use 11s on Gibson scale and 10s on Fender scale (which is 25 1/2", btw, not 25 1/4"). It doesn't make them identical, but definitely, imo, makes each feel how I think they should.

I still haven't decided what to string my 25" guitar with.

I think the 11s would add a little too much tension, and they're big so they will feel different too. How about finding another brand with the same gauge but more tension on them? for example I've heard many people say the d'addario NYXL's are stiffer than normal strings.

Re: so i guess i dont like 24 3/4 scale length

I use 9's on my fender-scale guitars, and 10's on the Gibson-scale guitars, but I prefer the SOUND of the shorter scale.

I like .11s on Gibson scale guitars. There's not much difference in tension between that and 10s on Fender scale ones.

Sorry for hijacking a bit, but what about hybrid gauges. Would 11-56s be a good substitute in 24.75 for 10-52s in 25.5?

In my old age I care less and less

But I'm a Gibson guy so 24 3/4 feels like home.

Re: so i guess i dont like 24 3/4 scale length

I can fully appreciate 24 3/4", 25" and 25.5" scales, although I tend not to mix the two extremes much on the same day. I get into phases. The scale length is not the only thing that separates a LP or SG from a Strat of course, but it definitely affects the types of things I play that day.

For soloing on the neck, 24 3/4" and 22 frets is the setup of KINGS to me. :D Although I do like the brightness and precision of 25.5 for for technical rhythm and leads on the bridge pickup.

It's what God intended.

Behold! MUHAHAHA

Jokes aside, I really feel at home on a 25.5, and I love the CLEAN sound of a Strat more than I do anything Gibson-related; however, I really do love overdriven LP tones ala Bluesbreaker Clapton or blues-era Gary Moore.

Way too bit a step.

Half a gauge should do it for similar tension.

Re: so i guess i dont like 24 3/4 scale length

With some differing opinions here, I guess the tension calculator might be the TS's best bet

Re: so i guess i dont like 24 3/4 scale length

I like both... because they are different. I usually have larger gauge strings on shorter scale guitars. Some pickups sound better with shorter scale guitars.
