So I tried the Behringer VT911 tube distortion today...

...and i must admit i had high expectations. The saleman took apart the pedal at my request (wanted to see if the tube was a replaceable 12ax7 - which it is) and it looked impressive enough on the inside.

Then i plugged it in!!! forgot about being able to play any 5th power chords in the first 5 or 7 fret positions, it sounded so garbled and crap. playing an open E5 was a disaster! if i could compare it to anything, it sounded EXACTLY like a good/decent distortion pedal does when the battery is dying. you know, that guuuuuuuuugh sound?

Leads around and above 12th fret sounded decent, but its lack of ability to play power chords at the lower end of the fret board just let it down totally.

steer clear of these! not worth the money at all. the tube BARELY glew at all

note: made that word up; 'glew', as in glowed but in passive past tense. seems fitting... might call websters hehe

Perhaps not enough voltage was getting to the tube. Is it a plug-into-the wall pedal, or is it powered by a 9v?

typical preamp tube operating voltage is 150v-250v so at such a starved voltage as it is probably running im not surprised that it isnt glowing much. tubes used in this fashion are typically used as much as an eq filter as a distortion generator
