So I went to see Collective Soul last night.

Not a PRS, Gibson, or Taylor to be found. Strange considering these guitars have been the staple of Collective Soul for years. I wonder if they just wanted to switch things up or if endorsement deals have changed.

The lead guitarist Joel was playing a variety of MJ guitars. Ed the singer played a Yamaha SG3000 and a Yamaha acoustic. Dean played a USA Dean Caddy that had a very cool top and a new Dean Soltero that is a take on a Les Paul. Both of the Deans were incredible to look at and have extremely high price tags.

Nice! I know Collective Soul has been using the MJ Mirage guitars for a while, but I was surprised to find out they cut out the PRS (I guess it was too redundant). Always heard good things about Deans highend stuff, never played a single one though.

Re: So I went to see Collective Soul last night.

I really never cared for Collective Soul as a band (however they are all great guys!) but anytime I know a PRS got the ax for a Yamaha Im a happy guy! I have an original SG2000 and it's an amazing guitar!

Those Solteros are wicked expensive!!
How was the show?? I liked Shine and one or two others..

Re: So I went to see Collective Soul last night.

I still love Shine... I like to play it the live way with the clean intro. Ed's was the first hollow PRS I had seen, for a while after I always thought a white hollow PRS would be sweet.

Collective Soul is one of the best live acts going today. My date kept repeating the following words: "I didn't know this is a Collective Soul song!"

Seriously, this band has a formidable catalog.

Re: So I went to see Collective Soul last night.

I saw 'em on the 4th of July. Budda and Splawn were the amps of choice. Ed played a Gretsch sparkle Jet most of the night, though he did pull out a Taylor jumbo for some songs. Dean went back and forth between a pair of Les Paul Customs (one in tiger eye, the other in a black/bluish over flame color) and Joel played a couple of MJ's.

The first time I saw them it was all PRS/Gibson/Taylor with Fender Twins and Mesa Rectumfriers. I guess they're going for a more stripped down sound now.

Re: So I went to see Collective Soul last night.

Sounds like they just wised up and got some real guitars:D

Re: So I went to see Collective Soul last night.

whats with all the PRS hating?? I was under the impression that PRS were the trendiest thing to own these days. Oddly, they dont feel right to me..

I think the PRS fad is fading away. You don't see them like you use to. I'm with you, they don't feel right. The neck heel on them is awful.

I for one LIKE the way PRS' look and feel, but they just don't resonate the way I like my double 'bucker guitars to resonate. Even the Singlecut sounds weird to me.

Re: So I went to see Collective Soul last night.

My opinion is PRS guitars are now very overpriced, and there are many manufactureres out there now that make a guitar as good as a PRS for much cheaper. Immediately Carvin's latest archtop comes to mind.

MJ guitars on the other hand are completely handmade, so while they cost more, you're likely getting better selected tonewoods, and you're paying for all the labor.

I personally can't get over the prices of PRS guitars at my local guitar center. Maybe it's because the ones I'm looking at have the artist upgrade package, but $3500 for a generic guitar? For that price I'd be looking for a custom build from a small lutheir, or even a Gibson Historic.

Dean pays big bucks to players who endorse their guitars, so that could also be a factor in his decision; if nothing else, he could have gotten the guitars for free from Dean.

im a huge fan of the prs hollowbody but their solidbody guitars (apart from the stunning tops) are just kind of...'meh'. def not worth the price tag

I checked out the prices for the two Deans played at the show and they both retail at around $4k. It's not just PRS that is charging too much. However, you can't fault Deans strategy. They throw a bunch of dough at an artist and give them some really cool Dean USA guitars. Then they produce a very nice asian ( I think they make some of them in Europe) that look and play almost the same. Kids are bound to run out and buy the cheaper models.

I've been wanting an MJ for a long time but find myself wishing they made one in a 24 3/4 scale. I love the cool paint that changes color depending on perspective.

Re: So I went to see Collective Soul last night.

I always like to look at PRS guitars, as they are always beautifully crafted and the design is very fluid, but after playing some of them I've found that they really aren't the best feel for me. They did sound pretty good, though.

I want to at least test drive a Soltero. Those are wicked gorgeous guitars. Too bad they cost almost 10 car payments! I wonder if Dean has any interest in endorsing a nobody like me. Ha!

Re: So I went to see Collective Soul last night.

Love the soltero also - haven't played one yet but just know it will feel and sound like my hardtail.
Hoppefully my next big purchase. No point in waiting for the Jap import as it is nearly as expensive.

Yeah, the Soltero is one of the best twists on the Lester, but the price tag is ridiculous. wouldn't pay that even if I had it. I'd love to try the Leslie West model, tho.

I love the look. Usually nice tops, and love the diving bird inlays. But, the prices make me cry and then they dont play and feel good to me.

I thought it seemed like the fad was fading. Boy, it was crazy for awhile.

Those Solteros and alot of the top Deans are sickeningly expensive. I cant afford most of the new upscale guitars coming out. Im glad the imports are getting so good!!
