So what do lipstick pickups sound like anyway?

Well, that pretty much sums it up. Are lipstick pickups basically true single coils in a special housing? Who can describe them the best? How do they sound and what type of music do you guys pley with them?

On the first disc (Albert Hall) of the Led Zeppelin "DVD", Jimmy Page plays a Danelectro with lipstick pickups on one or two songs.

I've only paid attention to one guitar that had them and that was a Chandler type Strat that Charlie Sexton was playing with the ArchAngels, and I'm not sure how much of what I was hearing was the guitar vs the pups, but he had a very "bell-like" tone. So much of what Charlie does is in his hands & head, too, so everything that I'm telling you is heresay, but they did sound quite clear and articulate.

I have a full set in a Strat. The two words I'd use to describe them would be bright and jangly.
