So What Do U Use EQ Pedals For?

I had an EQ pedal because I needed something to cut through more in solos. All I had to do was click it on and poof! I had all the mids I wanted. With todays amps and pedals it's easy to get a solo boost. I sold mine a few years ago and never needed one again. For my lack of knowledge about EQ pedals I wonder how many other ways they can be utilized.

There is another guitarist in my band, and for some songs he really needs to come out in the mix. I have a Boss GE-7 that I use to roll off the highs and high mids, which makes me fall back in the mix, leaving him room to stand out. I also use it for one song where I need a really mellow jazzy tone.

I had a Boss GE-7 for a little while... but I sold it since it sucked all the life out of my tone, even when "bypassed".

I'd love to have a transparent, good EQ, one that is completely analog and has true bypass.

My MXR sounds very transparent and I am pretty sure it is true bypass. I could be wrong though, It's the M-108 10 band EQ.

i use the boss GE-7. i'll use it in front for a mid spike during solos, really puts the tone over the top. another cool use is to put it in the effects loop where it can completely revoice your amp! one time i was trying to cop that scooped metallica tone so i did the upsode down V shape on the eq in the loop and BAM! totally made my amp sound like a randall or something

That is the first time I heard of using it that way. I've got to try this.

i have a GE7 and i like the sounds but hate the extra hum it gives me during high gain stuff.... i normally use it to add low end to smaller amps trying to get more of a stack like response..

Re: So What Do U Use EQ Pedals For?

I normally boost the output and the mids a bit which is cool, but that high and high mids cut is an approach I hadn't thought of! Very interesting, and it wouldn't add any noise. Better to take something off that try to add something that isn't really there.

To ummm.... ya know... EQ things.

Sometimes before the amp, sometimes in the loop.

In front of the amp it might be a gentle shape, or maybe a mid & level boost...

In the loop it's easier to shape the overall tone of the amp... scoop it out or make the cab sound a little bigger, notch an offending frequency.

Boss graphic is kinda noisy in front of the amp... not as noisy in a loop. It's an "ok" EQ at best... really noisy design though. Sometimes I'll drag a Speck EQ out of the audio world, that's fun to put in a loop... great tones, killer range & control, not a trace of noise... though a little expensive for a guitar amp EQ... lol

I used a GE-7 for years as a solo boost/overdrive, into the input of a Marshall. I dialed it in with a modest overall level boost, plus an inverted V shaped centered in the upper mids. It worked great, and I never really noticed or objected to any noise.

Re: So What Do U Use EQ Pedals For?

I'm not down on the boss... I've owned a black label one for years... never really had a problem with it and I keep it around. It's useful. Though it's really not a "great" design by any means... cut or boost any amount and there's a lot of noise on each band, doesn't matter if it's a 3dB boost or a 12dB cut... same amount of noise.

i use my eq's for making my single ended tube amp seem like it has more channels. its the answer for amp owners of the like.
