So you don't like speaker distortion

what did you do ?:

What would we say about Celestion Classic Lead 80's or
Mesa 90-watters (black shadows?),

Anyone move to one of those for their properties as a clean/undistorted speaker?

Or is a 200 watter pretty much the surest solution....?

This is for my 55w amp running 2/3's cranked, into a 2x12

a 50 watt amp into a 2x12 shouldn't distort the speakers, unless they're greenbacks or g12h30's

in which case i'd reccomend getting the eminence equivalents, much higher wattage

aha yes,
its a V30 and G12h30

I hear exactly what people mean now, about speaker distortion,
And I can say I'm part of the guitar population that doesn't like. Some people love it I know

You must be playing pretty loud...in which case, it's hard to tell what's distorting more: your amp or your speakers. Probably your amp.

The Vintage 30 is a 60 watt speaker and very loud and fairly clean...IMO.

My question is because I know what my amp sounds like when its recorded at home, at near-gig volume and I get great tones, pure .
My amp controls have their intended effect. Nothing is out of control.

Then once I bump the master up a notch for live play everything gets mushy. I know there's probably many factors but I know I'm pushing the speakers. Not on the brink of blowing I don't think, but the distortion is there. SOme like it but I find it annoying... maybe there's some other element of physics going on?

eminence makes a 75 watt version of the g12h30

like $80 i think, maybe less

It is an openback combo, not much control at higher volumes, grab a closed back cab with a pair of V30's or Classic Lead if you can take the clear voice they have, some do not like it, I like them for tuned down stuff with alot of pushed eq.

I've been using a 150 watt speaker that was stock in my Marshall 1x12 for years, (Marshall 1912 cab) and you can really crank the hell out of it without much distortion..... Cleans are clear from my C50 head and the dirt is wonderful from my 5150 head

GUESS WHAT-

I just made a shocking discovery that negates my whole question.

I went home at lunch and opened up the grill of my Avatar 2x12 in question, to check that the speakers were properly tightened to the baffle. I got the idea from some other thread elsewhere with the advice to "check the mountings"....this guy had a similar complaint to mine.
So I go in there and 2 screws on the g12h30 were not very tight, and 3 of the 4 screws on the V30 were so loose I could start them by hand without a screwdriver. GAAh.... there's no way I could have judged my tone accurately this way. Who KNOWS what the heck was going on in there at high volume. (I know why these were loose, and it was me, not the factory, thats another dumb story of a mod I tried to do in order to angle upwards the V30).

I'll get a better grip on things tommorrow at full band practice volume.
