Sold my trusty Engl Powerball

well since i got my ENGL Sovereign 100 Combo, i only used the PB for it's channel four since the Sovereign didn't do that kind of gain and djent.
When i got my chaos modded SD-1 for boosting the Sovereingn's channel four my PB started to collect dust since i just love everything the Sovereign does. It's just more open, more dynamic and more lifely than the Powerball ever was and with the added boost on channel 4 the closest Engl head soundwise would be the SE that shares the same open and harmoncially rich character.
A friend of mine really wanted it and took on my offer minutes after making it. I sold him the PB, the Z-5 footswitch and one of my two Engl Pro V30 4x12s.
I'm keeping the second 4x12 as an extension box for the Sovereign to give me the thumb and power i love from 4x12s(never really needed both cabs anyway i have to admit).
Today he picked it up and i actually got a bit sentimental since the PB was my first actual tube head(had a vetta II before) and it also was my first venture into Engl-land. But sometimes you have to move on for better tone
Just wanted to share some thoughts ;)

Re: Sold my trusty Engl Powerball

nice amp! but slightly to much knobs for me. still happy with my thunder combo.
have you tried a fireball before - i like it a lot...

Re: Sold my trusty Engl Powerball

Yeah the Fireball is a cool amp but not enough channels and options for me. The main point i like about the sovereign is the fact that it will do killer cleasn, great bluesy crunch tones and classic rock and still do the insane metal we know from engl.

Re: Sold my trusty Engl Powerball

Did I read somewhere else on the forum that Engl's are kinda like Peavey in Germany. What exactly does that mean. Are they readily available and priced good? Maybe I just mis-read or remember it incorrectly.

Re: Sold my trusty Engl Powerball

Yep,that's the point for the comparison with Peavey. Engls are to be found everywhere around here and their pricing is on a pretty average level for Germany.

Re: Sold my trusty Engl Powerball

May have to check out that combo, in that case... I always run a boost anyways, so it wouldn't be anything out of the ordinary for me.

Do you know if the Screamer/Thunder combo's can get into that territory, and do it well? Those are much more common/cheap over here.

Re: Sold my trusty Engl Powerball

No idea about the thunder(never tried one for more than like 10 mins) but the Screamer is quite close to the sovereign. It's a little less gain, not 100% as open and rich but you can hear that they are close relatives.
I figure the screamer can get into the same territory but not be completely the same.

interesting comparison. i can't reproduce that, due to i sold my first peavey quite soon. i think peaveys and enlgs are both
affordable sturdy amps. i like the voicing of the entrylevel engl
combos more then the cheaper peaveys, but thats a personal
opinion. the product range starts slightly higher priced, but
there is also no amp under 50watts. in generel engls are straight
rock amps with also brilliant (rather fender un-like) cleans. the
peavey db sound is more dirty, but i miss it currently when i'm
experimenting (should'nt have sold it :grumble:)

i am from austria, where i had to order my E322 (which took
about 3 weeks), cost about 780EUR and never let me down -
it got carried around a lot and once it got kicked back with hot
tubes on a party once. it also survived me so far :) - i can't
keep my screwdriver from any equipment i own. some people
doom pcb mounted tubes, but i haven't had any problem
with it so far. my engl thunder is now 3 years old and my engl jive (which is also pcb mounted) nearly 20 years old.

cheers, martin
