Re: Soldano Hotrod 25
REAL cool amp.
Horrible demo. It is a MUCH better/versatile amp than the video exhibits.
Mike is a very sharp and articulate man.
I had a Carol-Ann OD2r that was kind of like that. It ran 2x6L6 with a clipped power supply, so the power rating was "only" 30 watts. Was also a single input channel switcher.
I was never able to A/B it with a 4x6V6 amp that was equal. I had a 4x6V6 Fargen but the amps are night and day.
With that said..... there is a real difference/uniqueness to a clipped big bottle amp that is not prevalent in the 4x6V6 or 4xEL84 amps. As always, not better, just different. I think it is the CLEAN channel on these amps that sounds so awesome, while you still have the dirty channel in your arsenal that starts to go off at 30 (25 in case of this Soldano) watts instead of the higher headroom 50 watts from a "normal" 2x big bottle amp.
I think both Alan at Carol-Ann and Mike at Soldano should pursue this route with more "vigor". It is kind of an un-tapped niche in the otherwise saturated boutique amp market right now.
I would encourage any player to demo, or build a dual 6L6/5881 amp that takes advantage of the lower B+ power supplies.
They have their own unique place in the world of guitar amps.
