Some Gut Shots Of My JCM800 2204 (Modded)

Re: Some Gut Shots Of My JCM800 2204 (Modded)

Any idea who modded it? 83 is a good year.

Does it have more gain than stock, or just way to switch to a cleaner tone?

tubedepot.com is good in case you want knobs and corner caps.

What do the added knobs do ? What's the jack plug for ? [ switch on/off ? ]
There's an OP AMP chip there plus what looks like a couple of power regulation transistors/chips.

Ok so I just brought this guy back out (been using my 2210 for the last while) and I never hookup the footswitch...but it's pretty much what Gearjoneser was getting at, it's just a switchable Vol / Gain. There is VERY little difference in tone (I'd say just has a hair less top end, probably just due to the nature of switching over safely) and certainly no more gain. I never really used it from the beginning so I totally forgot what it was like.

GV - Added knobs are simply a foot-switch selectable Master volume and Pre-amp Volume. Jack on back is for the footswitch.

My GUESS as to who modded it comes from the PCB 'BRAGGS MMIV' MMIV = 2204, and the only person in the area I can think of would be Steve Braggs (Who owns Empress Effects), I have emailed him asking so we'll see.

Gearjoneser - Thanks, but I have come to love the chicken heads on this thing! Although a new corner wouldn't be a bad idea

Brought the 2210 home so am going to give it the same treatment. I know it's been modded as well to simply add a MV to the 'normal' channel.

EDIT: Confirmed Modded by Steve Bragg "Haha! For legal/liability reasons I'll say it must have been another SB since the work is probably shoddy as hell. But ya, seems like you have my old amp, or my friends old amp. It just allowed me to have sweet clean tones on the Marshall and then kick it up a notch."
Seems like a great guy, and funny as well. Super cool of him to answer me given he has a pedal company to run and this was done many years ago.

I saw this in a movie once: cut the red wire

Re: Some Gut Shots Of My JCM800 2204 (Modded)

The best mod for those is to take the volume knob and turn it as far as it'll go --> that way.

Re: Some Gut Shots Of My JCM800 2204 (Modded)

i like the switchable volumes like that, for gigging that would be very useful

Re: Some Gut Shots Of My JCM800 2204 (Modded)

You should experiment and see if an added OD pedal yields a better sound than the 2210's natural gain. You never know, because an 800 is a great base tone for gain pedals.

In my experience, a fat midgain Marshall with OD is often bigger sounding than a highgain channel, but a lot depends on the exact models.

^ My TS808 is on 98% of the set. And I agree with you 100%. Usually gain on the head is anywhere from 6-8, and the OD is set to min dist and max level, just to slam the ****er. Absolutely nothing beats it.

Re: Some Gut Shots Of My JCM800 2204 (Modded)

Just recently played a '58 Tele through a 800 w/ the marshall cabinet loaded w/ G12h30/55's, and dayum, it was one of the best tones i every hoid...no pedalz, just really crunchy organic toanz( course the '58 Tele probably would make a Pignose sound great).. And to think at one time was considering selling mines...i done me a lot of stupid things, but at least that wasn't one of them.I got gut shots of my '78 2204(?) hundret watt someplace.I havent sparkied mine up in over a year which is bad; bad for me and bad for the amp.
