Some more shocking workmanship by someone who should know better

I had to work on a mandoline for a friend who'd had some work done by another "luthier" recently.

As i've written an extensive blog on it I thought i'd just post it here as a link to my MySpace blog.

I think the responsible thing to do is to issue a warning to those who have little tolerance for unprofessional work that the blog contains some shocking revelations of professional incompetence.

Hmmm... is there a "The Hack´s School of Luthierie" somewhere that we need to burn down? Or are techs everywhere just becoming more incompetent by the hour? :eek13:

That's only funny 'cause it's not my mandolin...

*edit*: Oh, and because I'm not the one working on it who has to correct some shaddy work from a peer...

It does astonish me because the guy who did this (who I haven't named out of professional discretion) has been in the business for a very long time (longer than me) and is one of the more successful local techs.

The problem is that a lot of people start doing this sort of thing as a hobby, and that is fine if they have the self-critical capacity to look at their work and assess its quality, and learn from what they see and the mistakes they make, but all too often this capacity is absent.

I see myself as on a voyage of exploration, a continuous learning curve. There is always something I feel I can do better or, if not better, more efficiently. Others don't seem to think that way.

What was really shocking about this was that Liz had spent about three and a half times what I charged her to put it right on having the other guy bollox it up.
