hi, just wanna know bout heads, can they be used on their own? so they have a speaker? what do they sound like? whats the point of them? etc etc please explain

Re: Someone explain to me exactly what heads are please

An amp is made up of a preamp, and a power amp.

A head is a preamp and poweramp in one package.

A combo is a preamp, poweramp, and speaker(s) in one package.

I'll answer in more detail, a head is an amplifier without a speaker. No, it has no speaker, no, they can't be used on their own, you can destroy them that way. They sound like an amplifier. There are many different reasons to go with a head. #1, tube amps are very heavy, it lightens the load a little to be able to move a speaker cabinet and head seperately. My Crate Tube Combo Weighs 50lbs, my Carvin Legacy head weighs a little under 40 and it's smaller. Also, this gives the user the option to pick and choose which speakers and cabinets they would like to use to tailor their sound. They have a big impact on sound also.

look again, you posted at the same time I did

oh one more question, say i had a 150 watt head, would i only be able to put 150 watts of power into whatever cabinet i buy?

Re: Someone explain to me exactly what heads are please

150 watts is way more than anyone would ever need. Most touring acts use amps in the 50-120 watt range. You need to make sure the speakers can handle the wattage. If you have a 100 watt amp and four speakers, each speaker needs to be rated at a bare minimum of 25 watts.

ive read where some older marshall and hiwatts rated at 100 watts actually are pushin 120-130-140 when maxed out, depending on the conditions from amp to amp!.......thats crazy

so i guess its wiser to have your cab rated at least a little higher than the max the amp can put out

Best thread title ever!!!

Re: Someone explain to me exactly what heads are please

I don't get where kids get these ideas that they need like a 1000 watt amp. A good 30 watt tube amp will break your windows and make your neighbors call the cops. At 50 watts, my carvin legacy is too loud to play in my apartment with the volume at 1.

Re: Someone explain to me exactly what heads are please

No a head can't be used by its self it need a cab (speakers) or there is no sound.

but you dont need a big watt amp the most you would need is eather a like 50 watt tube amp or a 100 watt solid state those would both shake your walls.

Re: Someone explain to me exactly what heads are please

My 50 watt rectoverb head is rediculously loud. I run it through a weber mass which really works wonderfully. I used to own a 150w triple rec which was just a monstrosity of an amp. Way too loud for any application I can think of.
