Something that really gets my Goat

especially with kids today, is that they line up 5 or 6 different amps and cabinets, all hooked up together, then think they are so cool and it sounds great.
Total bull.
Thats for one thing- drone only, and drone sounds like hell.
A few different amps and cabs played at the same time is the very antithesis of good tone.
Less is more. One of the same kind of amp and speaker, or similar speaker. Anything else sounds like dog meat.
I can see running a JMP with a Superlead, because they are both similar Marshalls, and some of the cabinets are so rare, nowadays it forces you to mix similar sounding cabinets ( my G12-65 on top of my G12-25 cabinet , for instance)

THIS ( not a real good example of what I mean, since they are all Sunn pretty much, and would proably sound great) would sound horrible, just a typical hodepodge of amps and cabinets lots of guys here like to do now( some guy here throws all his different amps on a wall and claims they are so awesome);

I think 2 amps can be great, one amp to fill in what the other lacks, or maybe one set kinda clean and one set pretty dirty so you have some definition added to your dirt. Or for effects-laden setups you can do stereo or wet/dry. But yeah, if a player can't get a good sound from one or two amps, IMO the player is compensating for something they lack by adding more gear.
I swear some people are just trying to push the limits of excess.

One of the worst guitar players for doing this is Joe Perry. A few years ago I was watching a concert on TV and he had this endless assortment of guitars and amps. It didn't really make any difference what he was playing it all sounded bad and I was thinking what is all of this for? Meanwhile Brad Whitford played one strat the entire concert and he had two stacks behind him and his tone was excellent.

Re: Something that really gets my Goat

Ultimately (and hopefully) a player will take control of their sound as a part of their style, and end up sounding much the same regardless of what gear they use, because they're looking for the sound they hear in their head.

I taught my goat to play well. no-one really notices what amp(s) he uses any more.

Why do you care Metalmaniac ??

Jealous type eh?

Obviously there is the whole doom metal image of having a stack of amps but if someone uses several different amps and cabs to get a sound they really love why does it matter to you ? Just because they aren't using one classic Marshall they all sound terrible ? Doubt it. In my experience more is often better, at least with amps. I used to think "wow why does anyone need 2 or more amps" till I tried a dual amp setup with my new Guitar/Drum band and realized it was wayyyyy better in terms of filling a room and having a fuller and more open sound. Definitely works for me having 2 amps at each end of the room.

Now having 2 or more 150 or higher watt amps is kinda crazy to me unless you are playing arenas and not bars/clubs but It definitely does not "Get my goat"

Let it be man....

Re: Something that really gets my Goat

Jerry you should start a doom/drone band yo. You certainly got enough amps and crappy guitar playing technique! You'd become a cult sensation! :headbang:

Re: Something that really gets my Goat

LOL, that was definitely funny, convoys. Hope Jerry appreciates it.

Yeah, I'm one who loves the sound of more than one amp. One dirty, one bright and clean, and one warm and rich sounding. Sometimes two dirty amps with a different character to their dirt sounds really really good.

I'm with you. I sometimes use a Randall ss slaved to a Carvin tube, vintage 30's in with the Randall and 12m-70's with the Carvin. The sum is greater than the parts.

This is what I've found.Despite endless wandering in the wilderness... I always come back to the same tones. Fendery for cleans, and Marshally for crunch. And I always sound just like me. My gear is my shadow... just an image in the shape of myself.

Re: Something that really gets my Goat

I have found that I like amps with KT-88's in the power section for getting serious.

Re: Something that really gets my Goat

 Goat?
Must be hipster kids without Marshalls or their own sound...
