Well, I have not listened to this album for years. And I was blown way again today. First of all how the whole thing was recorded, I mean how you can hear all the cymbols, the palm mutes, the EQ is simply beyond perfect. And there Adrian .... does anyone have his signal chain for that Album, tour and and studio? Thanks guys.

Re: Somewhere in Time/Smith

no i am a maiden fan as well..... i believe for that album and tour they switch to GK amps....

Re: Somewhere in Time/Smith

GK ???? damn, I thought that was very classic marshall tone, either modded jcm800 or some modded plexi type with tube screamer in front .... hm ....

ya know when it comes to studio work an artist can pretty much use anything as long as it gets THE TONE.... they very well could of used Marshalls in the studio. Just that i remember in guitar mags and stuff around the time of this album i remember Maiden was using GK amps a fair bit for that album/tour... so they said in magazines anyways..

Re: Somewhere in Time/Smith

i love this album, but that has to be some of the worst production ive ever heard on a commercially produced cd. everything has tons of reverb on it, like it was recorded in a tunnel, and does not comare at all to the production of piece of mind, number, or even the 2 Blaze albums.

Re: Somewhere in Time/Smith

Adrians best effort ever with Maiden though its not my fave album...he (IMO) totally overshadowed Dave, and damn near the rest of the band on this album. Songwriting and his playing...he totally turned it up for SIT.

That was also his big change in gear.. jackson superstrats with floyds, rack effects, the synths. I'd say the bulk of that album was Marshall...but they did start endorsing GK amps around that time, and by SSOASS, I think it was mostly GKs.

Re: Somewhere in Time/Smith

For some reason, I love the production of this album, yeah there is a little too much reverb, but overall sound is just perfect for the songs and the feel of the songs. May be its because of Smith i always liked his stuff way more than Murray, kudos to JEFFB. Any idea what marshals exactly was used, and was it all Jackson strats or some fender ones as well? Any ideas on racks and stomps ???
P.S.
Wasted Years solo is one of my all time favs, all though the feeling and some trasitions are very Crazy Train Randy Rhoads solo.

i have not heard this whole album since the 80's.... i have a few tunes off it on cd... hits cd's... i like that sound... as far as production goes the big reverb like sound reminds me of the Production on YES 90125.... seems to be back then a few records from the 80's they recorded really dry sounding and then went to town with the reverb and delay later.... mind you it didn't have the Phil Spector echo warmth to it... more of a 80's digital sound

Re: Somewhere in Time/Smith

Really? 90125? I see no comparison for those 2- 90125 was drier, and a lot was heard better.

Re: Somewhere in Time/Smith

killer album. really takes me back to the old days of high school. it was my first maiden album. i think the production really fits the tunes and what they were trying to acheive. a little raw with some signals seemingly getting clipped or something, but that's OK with me.

perhaps you can see some of their amps in the video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-etNSjUNHE

that video really sucked me in, because back then everyone was posing so hard, making videos of not even playing their instruments, and there they were, all in a room jamming (perhaps lip synching, who knows). it was a shock to see a band actually doing that compared to all the crap on MTV back then.

back then they did do a lot of ads for GK, but in that same time period I'm recalling seeing Murray with a marhshall tube power amp and some type of marshall preamp. to this day, I associate the JMP with murray.
