Soooo....what's the verdict?

Frito's Better Half
What's the thing with SSL-1's and Ant II's. Would I be able to get a close tone to the Ant II's using the SSL-1? I dont wanna spend all that money for a tone close enough that I wouldnt be able to tell the difference.

Re: Soooo....what's the verdict?

The regular lineup is close to the Ant. Line, but you will DEFINATLEY be able to tell the difference.

Re: Soooo....what's the verdict?

I haven't tried the Ant IIs yet.

Actually, I was curious about them and posted a question long ago, but there just wasn't any feedback till Lew tried 'em.

there are advantages of the Ants - they're hand wound, the set is calibrated, and they come with covers

from your question, it sounds like money is an issue. In that case, I don't have a problem recommending any of the production strat pickups - SSLs, APSs, etc

that was part of the point of my comparison between my APSs and Ants ... I don't really favor one or the other, it's more a matter of application

an issue is the guitar they're going in. In my case, I built a custom strat from the ground up the way I wanted. I tried a set of harmonic design pickups, wasn't happy, so I tried the Antiquities, and they were terrific.

If you have production parts, there is absolutely nothing wrong with using SSLs, and you won't be disappointed. the level of construction, and the resulting tone of SDs is a notch above, say regular Fender pickups, even stock AS strat pups or Texas Specials, for instance.

for a vintage guitar, a guitar that's just special to you, or one you're very attached to, then consider the Ants.

not to confuse things, but another question is if you decide on SSLs, do you want to order a calibrated set or just get a hotter bridge pickup?

Re: Soooo....what's the verdict?

It's a guitar that I built from scratch using this that and the other. It does mean alot to me. I probably wouldnt sell it for the world. But, I dont have money just flying out of my fingertips, so I need something good but cheap. I've always liked Duncans production line, I used to have the SSL-1's in another guitar that I sold and really liked 'em. But as I'm saying, I dont wanna blow an extra 50-100 bucks on something that I wouldnt be able to hear the difference. I work around loud machinery all day (tractors, trucks, air compressors, nail guns, the like) so my hearing isnt as good as it was when I first started playing 6 years ago. I know that I probably wouldnt be able to hear a difference between the two, and if I did, it would be small, but what about my audience?

Re: Soooo....what's the verdict?

You'll hear the difference. The Ant II is similar to the SSL-1 but better. Everything you like about the SSL-1 you'll like better about the Ant II. It's like the diff between a really nice, high quality car like a Toyota Celica and a super high quality car like a Porche. Lew

But I dont like cars :D So you reckon that even after all my hearing loss I should be able to distinguish a difference? I wasnt able to tell the diff between some Tx Hots and APS-1's in a Fender Light Ash Strat. The guitar w/ the ants in it was the same, vintage setup, maple/ash. all that stuff, all I could tell was that the APS-1's pushed the amp a little harder *note* The Ant guitar DID NOT have the Custom bridge.
