Any shredders out there with FRED, EVO, Norton or PAF Pro info ? Dont get me wrong, i love my Duncans but there just might be something else by the other guys to fill my tone needs. I just cant find my perfect sound, i know some do and others never bust that cherry but im sick and tired of buying pup after pup and getting let down. Im looking for that 80s & 90s METAL tone, Lynch, Lee, Beach, etc. Iv tried the DD, JB, Custom, with good results and the Dime and Deamon too. The tone im looking for has to have three things, 1: It must be aggressive, 2: killer harmonics, & 3: and a even EQ. Its not alot to ask but its driveing me crazy trying to get what i want. Any feedback or suggestions would be great, thanks guys.

Re: Sorry, DiMarzio user,s please.

what you're describing sounds like a Custom, but you already tried that so....
try the fred, pretty balanced pickup with great harmonics. like a paf pro but with more mids.

Re: Sorry, DiMarzio user,s please.

bwt, one's amp also has to do alot with tone as well but it's not easy finding good amps that are affordable :(

Re: Sorry, DiMarzio user,s please.

Thanks MOOM, i guess im just to pickey.

Re: Sorry, DiMarzio user,s please.

Yeh thats true, im playing through a Crate GT1200 1/2 stack right know, hey its better than a ROUGE.

true , true.

also, what are your normal amp settings?

Re: Sorry, DiMarzio user,s please.

Solo : gain 8, Shape: 6, Level 4, - Rhythm : Gain 8, Low 6, Mid 3, High 8, Level 6. Its a 3 ch amp. when i go into a solo i just stomp my selector pedal. you know its nice to see a fellow shred head help out, thanks.

try this setting, it's what i use:

gain 5
bass 5
treble 5
middle 5
presence 7.5

i get a perfect rhythm/lead tone on my marshall avt150 with this. generally a scooped rhythm doesn't sound as full, which is why i dont scoop anymore. you may like this setting or you may not. i, mayself, am not a fan of "saturated" compressed sounding distortion. whihc is why i have my gain lower than normal and everything really balanced. more mids will give you better harmonics in my opinion. it'll sound fuller and just better! :laugh2:

Re: Sorry, DiMarzio user,s please.

but remmeber the Evo is a really, really hot pickup. im talking hot, it'll show all of your mistakes unless your technique is perfect. :)

Re: Sorry, DiMarzio user,s please.

OK i just set my settings top dead center, il give it a go and let you know the results, thanks MOOM, talk to ya tomorrow.

Re: Sorry, DiMarzio user,s please.

:bigok:
alright, i gotta go to bed right now so i'll see y'all tomorrow
:sleepy:

Re: Sorry, DiMarzio user,s please.

Never tryed the Crate GT1200, but (and I don't remember the model) I did jam through a MOSFET Crate that just smoked. Also knew a guy that used his JCM 800 for rhythm and his MosValve Marshall for lead. Just thought you'd like to hear from someone not beating up your amp.

Oh, are you looking for Gilberts tone? If so which one?

Chuck

well, it's obvious he's a racer x fan so we have a few choices.

for early racer x tones, the super distortion would be the best bet. wired in parallel, of course :D. so 2 of those for an HH guitar.
for later racer x tones, the tone zone for bridge and tone zone for neck.with a sound that's kinda like a wah wah put into one position as paul described it as. as well as a humbucker from hell for the enck position to keep it from being too muddy. and the last choice we have is the paf pro, whihc has that michael schenker sort of "uhh" sound. thought it's kinda fuzzy sounding, but i think it osunds great in the neck potition. so smooth :smoker:

and yes, i did watch the dimarzio promo vidoe 50 times :laugh2:

Re: Sorry, DiMarzio user,s please.

Two choices that weren't asked about ...
The X2N is actually a pretty flat eq pup, although many equate the flat high end response with being bright ... in comparison to other pups I guess I can see why. I don't know if you'd need all the gain an X2N has, probably with a hot preamp you'd want to back down the gain. As you made the statement about a pup being flat or even response the X2N comes into play.
A Super 3 is a nice warm pup, tight on the low end, but still punchy, very smooth top end ... if you need a pup with some extra sparkle, that might not be the one for you, it has tons of mids so it definitely has some attack and teeth to it. If you scoop your mids post distortion this might be an excellent pup, it's a bit hotter than the super distortion.
Concerning the EVO's they certainly don't list as being as hot output wise as some of the others ... but output isn't the only game in town when it comes to tone ... plus most amps have more than enough gain.
I haven't used the EVO's but they are reported to have a very good presence to them, very clear, and a bit more open when played clean then most *hot pups*.
The Norton has a bit more low end and mids than the fred, some call it a super paf, but I don't buy that analogy. To me it's a hotter fred with more lows and mids, so if one likes the fred but wished it was fatter, there you go. Just something else thrown into the mix to consider.

Re: Sorry, DiMarzio user,s please.

When really looking for a certain type of tone...that really starts with the amp IMO. The amp should get you about 75% of the way there...the pickups I've found just get you the rest of the way.

For instance, I have a Peavey XXX....it does 80's metal tones without even trying. I can do them with almost any pickup....BUT there are some pickups that sound better than other for the tones I'm trying to get.

If you're nowhere in the ballpark, I'd suggest looking into a new amp first IMO.

It's the same reason why there are people complaining they can't get the EVH tone even though they have the EVH custom shop pickup yet they're playing out of a Fender Deluxe or something.....it just doesn't work.

Nice review on those pickups Kent...I've had the same impressions of the ones I've tried.

AIR ZONE! just bought one to replace my tone zone and i can tell you they are very different.
the air one is much more open and dynamic, plus tones more articulate.
clarity to die for and it gets those late 80's 90's tones with ease.
sounds to me like a super fat higher output paf or something?
it is like a JB with a deeper tone but is just as rich in harmonics and sings like a canary
