SOS, please help with a pickup....

I just picked up an Ibanez guitar and whoever owned it before me had replaced the bridge p/u with a seymour duncan JBJ - I don't see it in the products list - what type (other than humbucker) pickup is this - i.e. what style does it work well for, high or low output, etc. When I plugged it in it did not seem as hot as the Ibanez p/u's in the other positions but than again it isn't set up very well yet. thanks in advance for any feedback.

JB Jr. perhaps. (SJBJ-1, listed under the Stratocaster product line.)

I saw that under the strat line but is that a single coil sized p/u - this is a traditional sized humbucker like in a Les Paul or something - inscribed in the back is the Seymour duncan name and logo and than there is a sticker that simply says JBJ:?:

Re: SOS, please help with a pickup....

It's a JB humbucker - the second J denotes the person who made the pickup. It's a medium hot output pickup, Seymour's biggest seller.

Re: SOS, please help with a pickup....

All full size humbuckers are based on the '57 Gibson paf humbucker, which used an alnico 2 magnet and was wound to about 8000 ohms or "8K".

The JB uses an alnico 5 magnet, which Gibson switched to about 1959, and which has more bass and brighter highs and less mids than alnico 2....usually.

The JB is also wound to about 16.6K...much, much more copper wire around the two coils than an original '57 Gibson paf.

This gives it a much fatter, stronger, louder output and tone.

It is one of the strongest humbuckers on the market that still uses the original Gibson '57 humbucker look and design.

The first JB was made for Jeff Beck and used it on Cause We've Ended AsLovers, Freeway Jam and quite a few other classics.

Lew I've seen a lot of your posts and was hoping you'd respond - you seem to have a real working knowledge of this stuff - helpful info - I love that song 'cause we've ended as lovers' - he and eric clapton do it live together although I can't remember what album thats on. Thanks again

Re: SOS, please help with a pickup....

iirc, the tune 'Cause we've ended as lovers' also featured the Jazz neck pup prominently in addition to the JB ... there is a very cool moment ( i think it is in the second 'verse') where he audibly switches pickups and dramatically alters the momentum of the tune ... i think it is one of the most persuasive demonstrations of how tone changes (especially from one great tone to another) have musical impact

cheers,
t4d

Thank YOU! The JB is one of my very favorite pickups and I used one for many years in my Les Paul. I've kind of gone back to lower output pickups again, like the Seth Lover, Antiquity and 59B in recent months...but I still really like the JB...and the Custom Custom too. Like many of us, I just like to hear something differant for a while. Lew

Actually there's less copper wire mass-wise . The original PAF humbuckers had around 5000 turns of 42 AWG, the JB has around 7000 winds of 44 AWG. The higher resistance come from the combination of the smaller wire and the longer length. It is still siignifigantly higher output with a different EQ Shape I'd have to say.

BTW, is it just me or are some of these smilies just a bit offensive? Such as :fing25: (not aimed at anyone!) and :damnit:

BS huh? That's not very friendly but so be it. I'm not a pickup winder myself, but it's my understanding that using a thinner wire allows more turns of wire be to wrapped around the coil and that using smaller diameter wire allows the wire to be wound more tightly with less "air" between each layer of wire. I'd think if one were to weigh the wire used in a JB, that wire would weigh more than the wire wrapped around a '59. Also, I've always been under the impression that JB's use 43 gauge wire. Duncan is kind of secretive about such things tho. Lew

Hi lew
I would agree with u on that. My knowledge of pickup designs tells me that more windings more out put ,more bass. Lower out put pups tend to be brighter( jazz for example)

Re: SOS, please help with a pickup....

IIRC, the JB is wound with 43 Polysol as are the Customs, not 44 xyz. May be off, though ;)

Re: SOS, please help with a pickup....

my friend has inherited a smashed up steinberg 'stick' guitar with 2 sd open coil buckers. one has a 'jbj' sticker on the back, the other has a 'dcj' sticker on the back. there is no other identification on them. i'm guessing jbj at the neck, dcj at the bridge? any ideas, anyone?

Re: SOS, please help with a pickup....

Heh - someone's been digging in the archives. :laugh2:

Welcome to the forum. A DCJ would be a Duncan Custom, wound by "J". ;)

And a JBJ would be a JB, wound by the same person.

Re: SOS, please help with a pickup....

hi,
thanks for the welcome...and for the links. yeah, i put a search on google for seymour duncan jbj, and the link to this discussion came up in the results. ain't the internet a wonderful thing! i only realised after i'd registered and was about to post my own question how old the discussion was. glad you're still there!
i looked up the pickups following the link, and it says they're both reccomended for the bridge!
i think what my friend has in mind is to put one in his sg, and put the other back in the stick (probably at the bridge??) and also put his synth pickup on there.
BTW, he got the smashed stick from a friend, who's wife had caught him cheating...heh heh...hell hath no fury, as they say..

thanks again! :bigthumb:
