Sovtek 12AX7-LPS tubes

Bought a scad of these based on how nicely they beefed up the Peavey Triple XXX's tone. Tried two in the Marshall Studio 15 and it turned into the brightest and most peircing amp I've ever heard (not good). It took the subdued Mojotone G12H30 I had just put in there and made it too bright even with the treble knob on zero. Removed the new tubes and put the old ones back and voila, it sounds like a sweet old marshall. The Studio 15 should have been released with a G12H30 instead of a vintage 30 in it. Majorly better tone with the G12H30. It went from rude and snarly to sweet and balanced. Brisk even approved of the tonal change and he's a stickler fo sho.

Brisk put the LPS tubes I took out of my Studio 15 and put them in his Rivera Chubster and it woke that dark amp right up. Gave it a much needed boost in the treble and mids along with about double the gain of the JJ's that were in there. He readjusted his EQ settings and gain settings and seemed to be quite pleased with the results. I used to not be impressed with that Rivera at all, but now I am. I liked it so much I gave the tubes to Brisk so he could keep them in there. The tone was so good, I didn't want Brisk to take those tubes out.

Re: Sovtek 12AX7-LPS tubes

I bought a couple of 12AX7-LPS' off eBay a while back, just to have some spare tubes around and to play with. I found they gained-up my 18 Watter and added some grit I didn't like. I didn't need the extra gain (I only run the volume around 6) so the Sovteks are back in the spare-tubes box.

They worked like they did in Brisks Revera in my 2100. Maybe they just work well with EL-34's????

Every amp likes something a little different.

Re: Sovtek 12AX7-LPS tubes

I find I pretty much only like the LPS tube as a phase inverter tube .I've tryed this tube in alot of different first gain stages, and I guess I really don't like it.The best tube I've found so far that I Like in my ole Marshall out of current tubes,is the GT 12AX7 M...In my BF Fender stuff the Tung Sol 12AX7 is nice and balanced, smooth, and warm...Everyone has different ears though.

Re: Sovtek 12AX7-LPS tubes

I like the LPS tubes in my Marshall 1987x and I liked them in my Fender Twin and HRD too. I like their clarity. They are popular with hi-fi freaks too.

Re: Sovtek 12AX7-LPS tubes

I popped a set in my old Peavey Ultra and while it definately made for a good tone out of that amp, one of the tubes went microphonic QUICK.

Re: Sovtek 12AX7-LPS tubes

That's their main flaw from what I've heard. They do have more of a tendancy to either be or get microphonic, so they can be risky in places where intense vibration is going to be prevalent.
