Re: Sovtek Tubes

Nothing wrong with them. They come as stock tubes on the majority of EL-84 amps. I think JJ's might be a notch above them, but Sovteks are perfectly fine.
Just the fact that you have fresh tubes will make most of the difference.

If you replace the pre tubes, don't seek out 12AX7WA's. Get something like JJ ECC83s or GT 12AX7C's

Re: Sovtek Tubes

My Fender Blues Jr. came with Sovteks. I have experimented with a variety of preamp tubes including Electro Harmonix, JJ, Ei, Shuguang (Chinese), Tung Sol, an NOS Jan Phillips 12AT7, and an NOS 5751. For power tubes, I've tried EH, Ei, and JJ. Not that the Sovteks are bad, but any of these (except the microphonic Ei 12AX7) would be an improvement IMHO.

To me, tubes are like spices with each amp being a different recipe. You might want yours hot & spicey, while another guy might want warm & mellow. There isn't a right answer, and there aren't many "wrong" answers. Try searching here for "12AX7" and "EL 84" to find lots of opinions - everyone's got at least one!

Right now, I've gone back to the EH preamp tubes but really like the Ei power tubes. Tomorrow, who knows?
