How many space should I leave between strings & humbuckers?
I mean, if they are far, how would it sound in comparison with a very close humbucker?
How do they differ in tone and what is the "standard" spacing that you should leave?
Closer pups to the stings will sound louder. I usually use one the patched in my POD X3 live. When I see the slipping I know i am a little too close
Every manufacturer has specific measurements for their instrument. You can check the manufacturer wen site and find out what the recommended specs are.
if its too low it can sound really thin and week, if its too high it can be ice picky,or boomy, i like it somewhere in between but closer to the strings then the body.
Also having the pups too close might effect your sustains as the magnetic field will be closer and stronger. Strings won't be able to vibrate much and this will decrease your sustain.

on the other hand, if the pickup is too far they won't pick up much signal, resulting in less sustain and a weak tone. generally, start around 1/8" and work a turn or two up and down from there, finding a sweet(sounding) spot.
