spare pickups: how is it possible this guitar sounds that good??

Here is a picture of a strange thing I built I'd like to share with you.

This guitar, if you are so dare to call it that way, has been made with pieces coming from 4 other guitars, I put them together to use some pickups I had in the drawer

The body is alder, it comes from a Squier Strat, I removed the thick poly paint and cut some wood reshaping it to something similar to a small Jaguar (!). I left a huge tremolo hole under the bridge, so you can see through, one day maybe I'll cover it because it's horrible.

I've stained the wood in red mahogany color, then applying over a pair of hands of inexpensive mall shellac.

The bridge comes from a chinese les paul copy, the neck from another bolt on LP german copy, tuners came from another guitar a friend of mine had.
I cut the pickguard myself.

The neck P90 is a ceramic copy, maybe it s a wilkinson or something like that.

The bridge is a Epiphone ceramic 8 originally installed on a Epi Les Paul JR, measuring 16.5Kohm, it sounds somewhat similar to a Duncan distortion (It was surprisingly good there but too hot, so in that guitar I switched to a SD Custom, much better sound)

Well, this is one of the best guitar I ever had, it is so ugly but so inspiring I can't believe.

You can play everything quite good but it really shines when I play grunge music.

It is a light guitar but has the right punch, growl and edge to cut through the mix, bright and tight but not ear piercing.

I originally wanted to install a split coil switch but I've found the in-between sound of the hb and the p90 is so f#@* good I really don't need anything else, so good I want to put a p90 in my LTD PB at the neck instead of the standard SD A2P to see if I can get something similar.

So, if you have some spare parts, try to mix before putting them in the trash bin or on ebay, sometimes lucky events happen.

Hey. You just invented the Fender Pawn Shop Series … eighteen months too late! :D

Astro would probably buy one and insist that it become his Artist Signature model. ;)

Re: spare pickups: how is it possible this guitar sounds that good??

Actually I built it before the pawn shop models were out, so I could complain with Fender for the idea rights :D

(btw, who's Astro?)

I dig it. I reckon it would look great with the body painted bright red (with paint, you could fill the trem hole and it would be invisible). A cream bobbin-topper on the humbucker might be cool, too.

"Oh, by the way, which one's Pink?" :D

Astrozombie is a member of this forum with a liking for distinctive guitars like the one that you have assembled.

Pink is Pink Unicorn Horsie, or PUH.

He haven't posted in a long time... at least in the sub-forums I frequent.

HTH,

Looks like a really fun guitar to play. Nice job.

Re: spare pickups: how is it possible this guitar sounds that good??

Actually, relative to the position of the neck/frets, it looks like the bridge should even be further forward (or the neck seated deeper into the pocket).

Re: spare pickups: how is it possible this guitar sounds that good??

The neck is short scaled, it's actually 24 3/4, that way the bridge is closer to the neck pocket than standard fender.

BTW, Originally I wanted a long behind-the-bridge string length, you can see the original holes of the stop tailpiece position, but I had big problem with strings popping out of the saddles, so I set it closer. Ugly, isn't it? But the strings are tight on the bridge now.

That looks really cool all around and I actually like the huge hole between the bridge and tailpiece. It looks like "something"... you have good taste in mutts.

I keep meaning to put together something like this but never get around to it.
