Speaker Break in

Just Ultimate Slacker
So, I just got a valve junior head from a forum bro (its on the way) and also got a warehouse v30 copy off ebay. I have read that a cd player run through your speaker at low volumes for 8 hours is a decent way to break a speaker in, but I was wondering some specifics.
Do you run it through your guitar amp, or do you use a cd player with its own amp ?
How about speaker mounting, do you break them in while in their enclosure, or just sitting out ?

I am going to have to build my cab, so I would like to have the speaker ready to rock once its done. If it needs to be in the cab, I will wait however.

Re: Speaker Break in

put it in a cab first.

i use a cd player to break it in but there is nothing wrong with just playing thru it either

Re: Speaker Break in

After a week or so with a few hours of playing everyday.
But normally I beat mine up for a full month with LOUD playing, on either the Hiwatt or the Rooster!
After that....all nice;)

Re: Speaker Break in

yeah, i thought proper breaking in was done by playing loud for a couple of hours?

Re: Speaker Break in

I would just play like normal. Maybe start out quiet at first, but then gradually increase the volume as I play.

Re: Speaker Break in

Speakers do need to be broken in, but each speaker is different in the amount of time needed. I have observed very little change with some speakers during the break-in process while other speakers seem to change quite a bit. There does seem to be some evidence that louder is quicker, but that isn't always a reasonable criteria to achieve.

Re: Speaker Break in

I think this subject is being way over-thought these days. Plug 'em in and play, thats all that is needed. Their sound is gonna change a little over time, hours, days, weeks, years, decades, but not drastically...........

Just my thoughts.....

Re: Speaker Break in

Break in time depends entirely on materials used. Speakers using fibrous materials in the cones and spiders, as well as rubber surrounds, take a little longer for the fibers to stretch. You have to be the most careful with these, too. It's like stretching before working out. If you start lifting before you stretch there's greater probability you'll pull or tear something. The natural materials seem to loosen up better (IMO) with a more cautious break in period - ie. not pushing them hard from the word go.

Speakers with synthetic materials, carbon fiber, neoprene, resins, etc need significantly shorter break ins. Some require no real break in at all, but those are more typically subwoofers in the car and home audio realm.

Re: Speaker Break in

I just got 2 new Weber alnico Blue Pups to mix in with 2 Celestion ceramics in a 4x10 cab. Here's my step by step break in method:

#1: Pull out the Jensen alnicos that were in there.
#2: Install new Webers
#3: Plug in amp
#4: PLAY !!!

Easiest mod I've ever done !!! :D
