speaker cable wiring

are the male jacks on a instrument cable the same as the jacks on a speaker cable? Can i get the 2 male connecters on a instrument cable, rewire the normal "ground" terminals together with 16 guage wire, and the normal "hot" terminals together with 16 guage wire? Will this function as a healthy speaker cable?

Never use an instrument cable as a speaker cable not as thick and two different animals but yes a the 1/4 jack itself works for both.
