speaker change in a PV classic 30?

Ive got all my axes dialed in, so I wanna get the amps square. I changed the stock speaker out of my PV classic 30 a few yrs ago with an Eminence Private Jack..
Big improvement, but it almost sounds too "Woolly" now. Anyone have a better recommendation for a classic 30? the stock one wasnt bad except when Id hit a big low note or chord (like an E) with good bit of volume, it would kinda hesitate and then make kinda a thud when it hit..
Like I said, now its just kinda woolly sounding..

Thanks!!

Re: speaker change in a PV classic 30?

I really liked the WGS ET65 speaker in my Classic 50. It has a big low end [kind of loose though] creamy mids and just the right amount of highs. I am really surprised at how good this speaker sounds with the different amps I have tried it with.

I can't remember or not, is the Private Jack the Greenback knockoff? I would also suggest Fane Medusa 150, but these are kind of spendy [I got mine used for $125 - brand new they are $200+]. The Fane sounds great with my Marshall JCM 900 which sounds kind of similar to the Classic 50 I had.

What you are describing is called overhang.

It sounds to me like this is not driver related, per se, but either:

1. cabinet resonance (Marshall cabs do this at high volumes all the time because they are built like crap, but it has become synonomous with the Marshall sound; personally, I cannot stand the sound of cabinet flex and prefer my cabinets to be inert -- downside of that is the weight, of course)
2. room loading from a nearby boundary

Try getting the amp cabinet off the floor and out of the corner/away from the wall. This will help. Or this.

I am willing to bet you that it alleviates the overhang.

Interesting!!! never heard of that. Now, are you referring to the hesitation I used to get? I actually have an amp stand kinda like the one pictured and got that thuddy sound with and without it before I changed the speaker..

Does the Gramma work?

Re: speaker change in a PV classic 30?

The Gramma is amazing, and yes, it works.

I would say, get the amp w new speakers onto the stand you have and get it away from the corners/walls; then you will know if it's the cabinet itself, the room, or a combination of the two...
