Speaker emulated output = headphone practice?

Hello,

I'm looking to buy a versatile tube amp (small to medium gigs/headphone practice at home).

The choices I got so far are: Engl E606 Ironball, Mesa Boogie mark 5:25, Peavey 6505 mini, Blackstar HT-5RH.

I noticed a lot of amps which are labeled to have a 'speaker emulated output' don't say anything about using headphones to practice at home.
But wouldn't I be able to plug in my audio-interface into the head and then plug in my headphones in the audio-interface? Am I missing something here?

If this would be the case, I could choose from a lot more amps!

Re: Speaker emulated output = headphone practice?

I have a mk1 Blackstar HT-5H. It has a socket that fulfils both functions AND is clearly labelled as such. Several twenty first century Marshall amplifiers also have this feature. I cannot vouch for the other amplifiers on your list.

Maby I wasn't too clear in my post but all of the specific amps I have listed are headphone compatible (the manufacturers explicitly state this).
However, my question is if an amp states to have a 'speaker emulated output' but doesn't say anything of headphone support, can I use my headphones for practicing?

Re: Speaker emulated output = headphone practice?

I have a Marshall JVM410H and have used the speaker emulated output with headphones without a problem so I don't see why you couldn't with any amp. The volume controls the volume.

Re: Speaker emulated output = headphone practice?

It depends, as that output might be too low in output or too high (and I am sure it isn't stereo) for headphones. You'd have to look at the output. However, those amps are full-on performance machines, so I think headphone use is way outside their job description. If you have to use headphones at home, use another device (software, practice amp), as one of those beasts at headphone volume is not likely to sound very good.

Re: Speaker emulated output = headphone practice?

I can say that the Blackstar Ht-5 sounds like garbage with headphones.

Consider the Yamaha thr 10 for home use, sounds great at whispering volumes.

Re: Speaker emulated output = headphone practice?

Haha, yes I have no doubt they will sound like absolute sjiiit through the headphones...
The thing is I really don't care.

I practice a couple of hours a day and work/social life forces me to do this at night (i'm quite the owl).
Its impossible for me to use a speaker during that time (appartement).

So I just wanted a relatively small tube amp for rehearsing and small gigs and one I could also use in my ****ty home studio for recording and practicing.

Maybe later down the road I will waste some cash on a POD or something to enhance my tone during practicing at night but this is not a priority atm.

Thx for the info.

Take a look at the Marshall dsl 5, can also be set to 1w sounds great! But have not tried it with headphones.

Re: Speaker emulated output = headphone practice?

Real stereo makes difference. If you strap a Marshall 1960B cab on your left ear and an Engl Pro cab on the right you can use the main speaker out if you wish.
