Speaker Farting out with Swollen pickle...

So I've got a semi-weird issue happening lately...When I'm playing at rehearsal/gig volumes through my Fender Concert II, with my Swollen Pickle MkII, on certain notes/chords when theres palm muting my speaker farts out pretty noticeably. Its not a MASSIVE farting out, but I notice it and it annoys me.
I've tried various things to clear it up (lowering bass on the pedal, and on the amp, etc...), without any really noticeable results. So I figured its time to ask you guys about it, I'm sure someone here will know something that will help (as there always is with you guys)....

So, heres all the details of my setup...

Fender american Telecaster (GFS Lil killer Bridge pickup wired in parallel), into EHX Small Stone> Swollen Pickle MkII > Boss DS-1 (never active at the same time as the SP) > Boss CH-1 > Boss TR-2 > Digitech Turbo Flange > Boss RE-20 > Fender Concert II.

The Settings on the Swollen Pickle = Volume ~12:30, Tone 1 o'clock, Sustain 9:30 (i.e. set fairly low), Scoop fully Clockwise (i.e. flat mids), Crunch Fully Anti-clockwise (i.e. fully compressed), internal controls are at the stock settings...
Settings on the Concert II = Clean Channel, Volume between 4-5 depending (its real loud), Treble @ 6, Bass @ 3, Presence 0, reverb off. Also the Concert has an Emience V12 Legend speaker in it, JJ 6L6's, and EHX 12AX7's in V1 & V2. All tubes are fairly new with lowish hours on them.

Generally If the SP is on, theres no other effects on, cept for occasionally the Small stone is on at the same time. It does the farting out thing with no other pedals in the chain also.

Now if I switch to using my Kustom Defender, I don't get the farting out at all, so the issue is something to do with the Fender + the Pickle...I generally use the Kustom to gig with anyways, so this isn't a huge concern of mine...But Still, I'd like to figure out what the problem is, so I can fix it.

So yeah, anyone got any suggestions? Do I need a new/different speaker? Will Turning the Presence up tighten it up/make it fart out less? Anything else I should try?

Re: Speaker Farting out with Swollen pickle...

Now when you say farting out, is the gain stuttering or is the speaker distorting real bad?
I'm pushing my pre amp so hard right now, I can make it sound like a devi ever zelda fuzz.
But in certian speakers, I've found you can make them kinda do the same thing.
Or do you just loose power for a moment?
I'm asking becouse i'm using a way huge pork loin as a clean boost as well as a boost r.v.b., and i'm getting kinda the same thing you are. But, I kinda like it.

By farting out I mean the speaker seems to be distorting really bad. Sorta sounds like when you hear someone with the bass on they're car stereo cranked, and REALLY low notes/electronic bass drums, make it just fart out. Not losing power or anything. Just like the speaker and everything has reached its limits and just sorta farts out.

It only happens for a millisecond here and there, and it is sorta a weird/kool sound, when I want it to happen...When I don't want it though, its really annoying.

As Aceman says, this is not a secks forum. :chairfall

Re: Speaker Farting out with Swollen pickle...

I think it is a combination of your speaker and the SP fuzz itself.

The SP is a Hot Rodded Big Muff imo, with massive ammounts of low end.
To my ears, much more than a stock big box Big Muff.

I had the same problem w my Big Muff, and Fuzz War going into the lil BJr.
The poor speaker just could not handle it. At All.

Now, if you retro fit your 2X12 Fender Concert II with somehting like a 100-150W drivers (Emi Swamp Thangs, or Commonwealths) i am sure they will stay composed no matter what fuzz you throw at them !

It does sound like you need a speaker that can handle the load. Try a 150 watter.

Yeah, I know the SP is basically a modded muff (which is the main reason I got it in the first place) with more control. Honestly the Bass isn't that much more present with the pickle than it is with a standard muff, its just fuller freq response. If I scoop the mids, rather than keep them flat with the scoop control, the farting out doesn't happen. But then I don't stick out in the mix so much. An I honestly don't think its the bass thats causing the farting out, cause if I turn the bass all the way up on the amp, and turn the tone on the SP to be more bass heavy, it doesn't happen any more or less, still the same.

At this point I'm sorta thinking its just a matter of the speaker Distorting in a way that I'm not digging, haha. Cause it doesn't happen with any other amps I have, and doesn't seem to be affected by eq, only by volume. So I'm thinking its time to start looking into different speakers again. Need to find some speakers that won't distort as much/at all.

BTW the Concert II is a 112, and doesn't have the stock speakers. The Speaker in there right now (Emi Legend V12) is rated for 120watts, but is based off a V30 (from what I hear) and does have a little natural distortion.

Yeah, I think I'm gonna be getting a Swamp Thang to see if it works out better for me. Thanks for the links.

When I first saw the title of this thread, it was in the line through my bifocals. I thought it said, "Sparks Flying Out of my Swollen Pickle".
