Speaker Impedence Question?????

Go figure....ANOTHER impedence question!!!!

I've got a pair of speakers that aren't marked anywhere as to what ohm rating they are.....is there a way to tell or measure it???

Re: Speaker Impedence Question?????

If you have a multimeter with an OHM setting you can measure it's DC resistance which will give you a good idea of the impedance. I just measured a 16 ohm speaker in my Marshall...it read ~14.8. The number won't be exact but close enough to give you an idea. Your measured number will be a bit lower than the actual impedance. So round up and there you are.

Re: Speaker Impedence Question?????

Very cool....you just throw the probes on the speaker connectors like you would a pickup, I take it???

Re: Speaker Impedence Question?????

Speaking of ohms, a $2000 question on Jeopardy yesterday was "this unit of electrical resistance is named after a 1?th century German scientist." I guess Physics and playing guitar are useful for some form of education afterall....

Your meter readings will be lower also...4 ohms will read around 3.1 or so...8 ohms would read around 6 ohms...

Ever heard of 5.1 ohm readings? All 4 speakers in my 4X12 measure that. I had to wire them all in series just to get above 16 ohms for my Marshall, although I could have it series/parallel and set the amp at 4 ohms but I didn't. :D It's an old Music Man 4X12. No clue what brand speakers they are.

More than likely just the difference in meter readings.

I had thought that too but two different meters show the same reading (one digital, one analog).

Your readings are pretty close to an 8 ohm reading..8 ohms "never" actually reads 8 ohms..Just make sure your cab impedence is higher than the rating on your amp..Ideally you want the same impedence match between the head and cab naturally.

Thanks for the confirmation. Since it's wired series, it's around 20 ohms so it's good to go.
