Speaker question

brisk

I have two questions. I just got Soldano Lucky 13 2X12 combo which has two 8 ohm speaker out and one 16 ohm speaker out. Two Enimence Legend speakers are connected to the 8 ohm speaker out. I unpluged the internal spakers from the amp and tried Avatar 4X12 cab with vintage 30s. Avatar sounded better. So I am thinking about exchanging Enimence speakers with vintage 30s.

(a) How should I connect 2 vintage 30 (8 ohm) speakers to the 8 ohm speaker out?

(b) For smoother response, which speaker would you suggest?

Thanks!

Re: Speaker question

Here's how to figure impedence with speakers. You take the number of speakers and divide it into the impedence of each speaker. So if you had four 16 ohm speakers you'd divide 16 by 4 and come up with 4 ohms...so the 4 ohm output jack would be what you'd plug into. If you had two 8 ohm speakers you'd divide 8 by 2 and come up with 4 ohms again! If you had two 16 ohm speakers you'd divide 16 by two and come up with 8 ohms...and you'd plug them into the 8 ohm output. I would not mix 8 ohm speakers with 16 ohm speakers. Lew

Thanks Lew.

Then I guess I need to get two 16 ohm speakers for the 8 ohm speaker out, right?

Another option would be to replace your two speakers with a pair of 8 ohm speakers and connect them in series. That will result in a combined impedence of 16 ohms and you would then plug them into your 16 ohm out. Lew

Re: Speaker question

You asked about a speaker that would be smoother. The Celestion G12H30 is smoother than the Vintage 30 and also has more bass. You might also consider one G12H-30 and one Vintage 30....used together they make a great set and really compliment each other! 8 ohm speakers are easier to find and easier to sell than 16 ohm speakers. I'd consider going with a pair of 8 ohm speakers, wire them in series (not parallel) to get 16 ohms and then plug that into the 16 ohm output jack. I'm not familiar with your amp, BTW...never played through a Soldano. Lew

Agreed, this is the way I'd go brisk. Two 8ohms in series = 16ohms
Your Soldano either has two 4 ohm in series or two 16 ohm wired parallel, to be hooked up to the 8 ohm speaker out.

Pictures always help me. :)
