Speaker question?

What's Your Forum Nameologist?
I really love the tone that James Wilsey (used to play with Chris Isaak, that's him on "Wicked Game") gets on these tracks - it's clear and bright and very twangy, without being harsh or piercing...obviously, it's Fender city all the way here (although he said something about using Pod Farm on the album, but who knows what the truth is? Haha!!), but I'm thinking that the correct speaker could make a huge difference in getting a tone like this. Open to suggestions, though I tend to be an Eminence guy...anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks!

Re: Speaker question?

Here is your answer - straight from the horse's mouth!

"I always used the pickups that came with the guitar. Wicked Game was done with a 62 RI. I always used a silverface twin w/ JBL's, and a Roland delay and a little volume pedal for swells. The recordings were none with the guitar a bit dry, and we'd add some stereo delay and reverb in the mix."

I think there was a 57 and maybe a big condenser mic, and we'd use a blend of both. I don't recall anything special about that recording- we were working on a dozen or so songs for the album at the time- all using generally the same setup, which was the same gear I was using live.

The sound itself isn't very complicated, clean amp w/ spring reverb, some delay and a strat....

Re: Speaker question?

those two tracks you posted are killer recordings too btw!
As a twin player tho ... i had a pair of weber california's in mine (jbl clones) but much prefer the darker, fatter and less efficient texas heats.

Re: Speaker question?

Love my Texas Heats in my Twin. Just starting to break in and they get better every time I play them. The cleans are fantastic, and they take OD pedals very well. No ice pick, but they are not muffled either. Just right for how I want a Twin to sound. Like you said once before Gibson175, it's like they were made for a twin.

Re: Speaker question?

Thanks for the replies and the info! Yeah, James Wilsey's album El Dorado is excellent, especially if you're into that twangy-moody-retro thing (DISCLAIMER: I'm not affiliated with him at all; never even met him). So is the consensus that the Texas Heat in a Fender amp will get me in the ballpark? For what it's worth, my main gigging amp is a Blues Deluxe Reissue.

Re: Speaker question?

The main ingredient is the twin and the strat. The speakers are more or less just seasoning it to taste.
You should however be able to get a pretty nice sound out of your Blues Deluxe too if you don't want to spend a lot of money on a twin.

Re: Speaker question?

I love this kind of tone. I can get something similar with my Bandmaster Reverb. I converted it to a combo and run it with two Emi Tonkers. With the Tonkers it's not quite as hi-fi sounding. Critical to this type of sound is the pickups as well. I have had great luck with my bandmaster and a Strat with fat 50's pups. My Strat with antiquity I pups doesn't have the same edge to the tone.

Speakers, to me, make a rather large difference in the sound, depending on the speakers you are comparing. For example, in this case, I used Tonkers in that combo, but sometimes run the same amp with 2 x 12 Celestions. The tone is very different and much more overdrive friendly with the Lynchback Celestions.
