Speaker questions... Lot's of!

I would like to experiment with some speakers for different tones and fun!

1) Too many greenback celestions... I'm confused! What are the differences between them? I can see the different specs but do they sound very different?

CELESTION G12H 30 Watt http://professional.celestion.com/guitar/products/heritage/detail.asp?ID=7

2) Anybody has tried both speakers?

3) Any experience with this speaker? Seems like an interesting speaker.

I'm interested for use in a pine 1x12 open back (now fitted with the Red Fang). Amp is the Epiphone Valve Jr head and I'm waiting for my Cornford Carrera (V30 speaker, 5-8 Watt output) to arrive. I really liked the tone of the Heritage G12 in the Laney L5T-112 I auditioned that's why I'm considering the greenbacks.

The differences among these various GB re-issues are:

G12M25-This is the standard re-issue since about 1989. It's tone is based more on the 70's G12M sound rather than those of the 60's. These speakers add some bite to the pick attack. Power Chord crunch from these in a closed back 4x12 is very classic rock. These are made in China now.

G12M20- Heritage. This speaker is more to the original 60's GB sound. A/B tests with original 60's GB have been promising. It's warmer than the 70's GB sound. It's still made in England.

The G12H30 uses a bigger magnet. It has a lot more bass (and a little more treble) than a regular 25 watt GB. It's also louder. It has the tighter, stronger, more articulate, bass needed for open backed cabs and combos. The other 20-25 watt GB's may not have enough low end or be tight enough in the low end. G12H30's just work very well in open backed applications.

Someone else should speak to those other speakers comparison questions.

... but here's only one answer: Eminence Cannabis Rex.

The best sounding guitar speaker ever made.

New, it sounds just great, clean or dirty... but it'll sound at its best when it gets break-in, which it might take a little while, but I can tell you, it's well worth the while!

Best or great don't say much. Tell me more, I'm interested if you are experienced with this speaker.

I'l leave LPB's answer on the Greenbacks and H30's alone...thats the basics of it anyway. On the topic of the old vs the Emi red fang, the Emi is close, really close but the Gold is the cream of the crop in higher power alnico blue style speakers. I have not tried the Mojo Greyhound, sorry.

What exactly do you wanna know?

At home I'm using one in my Behringer V-Amp LX-112 combo and one in a separate cab, both partially open at the back.

Live I use a 2x12 stereo wired partially open cab with a Peavey 50/50 power amp and a Behringer Pro preamp.

I can dial-in any sound recorded sound from almost any record, Stratty or Lp'ish, clean or dirty, loud or soft; the speakers reproduce all I throw at'em faultlessly. Sultans of swing? You got it! Santana old or new? You got it! Gary Moore? You got it! Larry Carlton and/or Robben Ford? You got it! Barney Kessel and or Joe Pass? You got it!

Just don't ask me about Metal, I just can't stand it.

Edit: I've just re-read the OP. An Epi Valve Jr.? I don't think you'll be able to get any good tone from that one, unless is heavily modded. That Red Fang of yours do faithfully reproduce all the frequencies the head is capable of producing. If you don't like it, I don't think the speaker is at fault. But of course, YMMV.

HTH,

HTH,

To be honest, I think the valve junior through a v30 (or the WGS copy in my case) is pure classic rock. I have mine in a sealed 1x12. However, I cant leave well enough alone, so mine has a standby switch and a hammond OT. Nows its even more of a good thing. I have a few pedals to use with it, but so far all of them have ended up being removed for the amp sound by itself. Right now I am leaning towards just a volume boost in front.

HTH,

My Epi is stock and I refuse to spend any money on it. It's good for what I spent and it has been my only amp for more than a year. It sounds different through the VHT closed back than in the pine open back. The VHT/Eminence does not break up in bedroom levels or in a studio rehersal. The Red Fang breaks up with the Epi on 11:30 and sounds like sh*t... I really don't know what I don't like, the speaker or the amp, but I will find out in a few days when the Cornford will be here. The Cornford will be my main amp from now on, it comes with the V30 stock. I will also run it through the other two cabs and see the differences.

The VHT cab sounds really good, tight, clean, punchy... almost Hi-Fi! It can do cleans & hi-gain sounds. I'm searching for a speaker to fit in the pine open cab, for vintage cleans & in between sounds. Just mentioning that the pine cab is much bigger than the VHT cab.
