Speaker sim/load box question

Hey guys, i have a question:

- Which loadbox/speaker sim is better: The Koch Amps Load Box II, the Palmer PDI03 or the Palmer PGA 04 ADIG-LB? And also just to make sure, is it possible to play them without any speaker sound? And, is it possible to plug a headphone in the line out of the Palmer's, since they don't have an exclusive headphone out?

Thanks!

Re: Speaker sim/load box question

All good questions, wish I had an answer for you.
Dunno about the Koch, but forum member Toe-knee has a Palmer unit (dunno whic one) ...

Re: Speaker sim/load box question

I dunno about the Koch but from a quick lookup, it's not as feature-laden as the Palmer units. The Palmers say in their description that they can be run without a speaker box, as the will load the 8ohm power.

I will be willing to bet the Palmers are way more expensive, but I think there's a good reason as to why A-list/headliner music acts more often than not have one of PDI03s in their signal chain. If it isn't supplied by them, it's usually in the venue's booth line. The PDI03 says it's XLR out to mixer, so it's not a headphone out per se.

Re: Speaker sim/load box question

Yeah, my doubt is regarding the use of headphones in the palmer and if the Koch is as good as it, cause the price difference is really negligible. All in all i have another question too: - Will it be ok to plug their direct out into the guitar in of my PODxt, using the Tube Preamp with no cabs simulation? I really don't have a mixer/interface atm.

Re: Speaker sim/load box question

I can't see why you wouldn't be able to. You'd also be able to monitor via the podxt as well with headphones.

Is there an effect shutoff type of thing on the xt? I have the HD desktop and it can pretty much be a straight-up USB interface with no effects if I wanted to do that.

Re: Speaker sim/load box question

Yeah, you can turn it all off. Only doubt i have though is about that line input/instrument input type of stuff, if it would work well with the loadbox in case the input on the XT is an instrument one.

Either way, now that you mentioned you have the HD, how is it? Are you satisfied with it compared to a tube amp? I too could buy a POD HD 500x or an Eleven Rack instead of the loadboxes, and am confused, since i don't have a mean to try any of them before buying. :/

Re: Speaker sim/load box question

Well, the sounds are pretty good on it, but I'm not sure it can replace a tube amp. If you're wanting to pay heavy it might work out. I'm not a big fan of the cab sims, but the 500 is better than the Desktop one I have, and may have better/more cabs available. The X versions are apparently upgraded from that too.

As far as the sound goes, I think they do a pretty good impression of the amps, but without the massive air pushing and volume it's hard to tell. I would want to run the amps into PA speakers of approximately the size the amps in question are. The Engl with the oversized 4x12 cab I could see wanting at least a 12in and a sub on a PA system. Personally I like the Park 75, the Supro and Gibtone 185 amp emulations the best. The Tweed Bassman is a pretty good one too.

There's a LOT of control in the Pod if you plug into a computer, and it's a low latency USB interface too. The 500 has two in's and a microphone in as well, I guess, so that's awesome. I plan on keeping my Desktop around as a delay/reverb machine when I get a decent guitar amp until I find another better tool.

Re: Speaker sim/load box question

Hm, nice. =) I checked the Gibtone 185 sim, it's really impressive indeed. Either way, i won't be able to mic or play through my amp anytime soon, only through headphones or lame desktop speakers, so that's what i was wondering, if i'll get a better recording tone with a POD/11R or my tube amp through a loadbox+IR cabs.
