I've got a Peavey 5150 combo and I play hard rock and old school early 80's style metal (NWOBHM). I want to replace the speakers in this amp and I'm asking for your suggestions. Thanks!
Re: Speaker suggestions for Peavey 5150 combo needed.
2x12? Definitely with mismatched Celestions, preferably the brits
Two mixes I've used and loved on a 5150-family amp:
Brit V30 / Mesa C90 : juicy lead tone
G12k-85 / G12-65 : meaty meaty rhythm .... k85 are the old british design of the k100, not sure if some of the rebadged k100's weren't also brits, but k85 definitely ain't from china
Might just be a winning compromise between the two.... then again, so might c90/g12-65, and with that pairing you'll never get china (all mesa branded speakers and all g12-65's were british, always). Also, C90's seem to be readily available used for cheap cheap cheap and are really nice
In and around bigger American cities, getting an old uk v30 for $60-75 and a mesa c90 for $40-60 locally shouldn't take more than a day... OP is in socal, off to another side of the same greater metropolitan area as me, so has access to the same local-ish deals
But yeah for like $145 ea, you can buy new UK ones via Mesa's website
Re: Speaker suggestions for Peavey 5150 combo needed.
I can't remember the code# on the cone's back for the mesa v30, but if buying used make sure you check it first. I've seen many craigslist ads misrepresent.
There's a code for the 8ohm and another for the 16ohm UK-mades.
It's also easy to see if installed by just removing the side handles on most cabs. Might need a flashlight.
