speaker test (7080 vs Lady Luck)

ok, here's the comparison of speakers in my epiphone valve jr. 1-12" cab.

used my bell carillon 10-watt PA with a marshall jackhammer pedal [on the OD side] (both have a pause after which is just the clean amp by itself)

Lady Luck:

7080:

I'm kind of torn recording-wise. I like the mids/presence of the Lady Luck, but I like the heaviness/thickness of the 7080. In the room/live I like the 7080 better.

If I had a 2-12" I'd probably use both to compliment one another, lol.

I'm not the best at mic'ing an amp, but this at least gives a good comparison in that I used the same settings and same mic placement.

What say you?

I am digging the Lady Luck, looser which I really like. The open character of the notes is also cool.

I love my 7080, I've got it mixed in a 2x12 cab with a V30. I really like the fatness of the 7080

that'd be a cool combination, vintage and modern sound in one cab. (I put you down for a 7080 vote, hehe)

Re: speaker test (7080 vs Lady Luck)

Lady Luck for me. I like the looser sound. The 7080 just seemed a little too stiff and compressed, especially on the soloing. I can't remember how long you've had it, though. Is it broken in or will the sound change and develop over time?

Killer playing, by the way.

Re: speaker test (7080 vs Lady Luck)

The lady luck sounds kinda boxy on the drive tone. The 7080 is tighter, which I like. Clean tones are comparable IMO

Re: speaker test (7080 vs Lady Luck)

thanks doods!

[to answer kam, the 7080 isn't broken in at all - I basically dropped it in started recording it; not sure how much it will change over time but becoming looser might be a break-in benefit]

trev - yes, the box thing is what drove me nuts in the room. couldn't put my finger on it at the time.

I have the same cab, and I put a Celestion G12M70 in mine that sounded way too bassy in a closed back cab, and having it in an open back really made it a lot better. Then when I had a Carvin VL12 speaker in the same Epi cab, it HAD to be closed back, otherwise it lost all oomph. So, you may try putting a plany of plywood in the back of that Epi 112, and trying it again. For me, I'm sticking with the Celestion and an open back.

Seventy/80.

i just got one myself, but i haven´t installed it yet.

cool - I opted for quick connects from rad shack (but soldered the quick-connects to wire side).

as an aside - I may have used the wrong pedal for the test to begin with. just tried out my tube king (much better EQ section) with the bell amp, and it was the cat's meow (treble cranked, some mids dialed in, some bass removed - bingo). I was on the fence until I busted that out. I'll do some clips tomorrow.

I like this one the best so far.

cool, thanks for checking it out! I think if I do a little better mic placement, some light eq in the DAW, this amp/pedal/cab setup will work out good for my home (demo-ish) recordings.

Depending on the music, I agree. The lady sounded too vintage in the first recording, the 7080 very dark, but this recording with the different box seems to have mixed it together a bit, adding some more highs/mids to the 7080 while cutting some lows.

Re: speaker test (7080 vs Lady Luck)

Of the first two: Lady Luck

But I like that more recent one better than both of the first set.

thanks ex!

I never did a tube king/LL test, but given I like the sound in the room better with the celestion, I do believe the LL is on its way to being sold. It was a worthy challenger though, and all I can say is that I don't prefer its vintage/midrangey tone, as much as I like listening to (and sometimes playing) music with a vintage vibe.

they actually sound like they'd compliment each other well on a mix, rhythm through the 7080 and lead through the LL or both locked in
