speaker upgrade for a blues jnr

scottish

WeirdScienceologist
so im looking to get a new speaker for the blues junior i have lying around my house in the hope i will start to dig it again. i currenty has adjusted the bias via the Bill mods and that made a big difference.

i have a good offer on a celestion alnico blue but ive never heard one. i like that classic fender amp tone so i dont want to tread too far away from that. i like warm, i do not like twang, but i still want definition.

alnico blue a good call?

Re: speaker upgrade for a blues jnr

forget the alnico blue, thats not going to work out.

right now im looking at webers but i really dont know jack about speakers so any advice here is welcome

Re: speaker upgrade for a blues jnr

I know there are tons of threads on this over at thegearpage.net if you haven't been there yet..

edit: Thinking about it, I am sure bungalowbill might help you out on this one..

Re: speaker upgrade for a blues jnr

the alnico blue sounds fantastic in a blues jr, but you have to coax it in (read as smash stuff with a hammer to make it fit) so a ceramic is probably a better choice.

a 12" weber ceramic would be a good option. one of his versions of a c12n would be a good choice

are the ceramic speakers generally smaller in profile or something? and if this is the case, does this pretty much rule out an alnico speaker without modding the cab?

it's usually the bell on the alnicos that intereferes and encroaches on the chassis. since ceramic mag speakers don't have a bell, they're shallower in profile

if you want to check this ahead of time, most speaker manufacturers have completes specs, including dimensions

Re: speaker upgrade for a blues jnr

yup, what curly said. ceramic fit fine, alnicos dont. to get a blue in i had to take off the bell and "modify" the amp a little to get it in

Re: speaker upgrade for a blues jnr

thanks. im gonna give ted weber a call today and see what he recommends.

as always, much appreciated guys

Re: speaker upgrade for a blues jnr

The Weber 12F150 is a fave with a lot of folks---pretty close to a C12N. Another ceramic that would work might be the Signature 12" with the British style cone. I've fit the RI Jensen alnico P12N in a BJ, but without the bell cover---it just cleared one of the EL84's.

Re: speaker upgrade for a blues jnr

so what would the main difference between one of their c12n clones and something from the british seires, like a blue dog, be? I know this is probably a dumb question, but i really have no idea about speakers.

Re: speaker upgrade for a blues jnr

Celestion or Clone thereof.... V-30, 12H30...I even had a cheapo 70/80 in it and it sounded good.

Try eminence too, they make some real good speakers for a decent price.

Re: speaker upgrade for a blues jnr

i used a g12m in my junior till i sold the amp to my bass players brother, i kept the speaker. i loved the tone but some might prefer something with more bottom and maybe a cleaner tone. the greenback was great for getting a fat southern rock tone that didnt step on the bass player too much

Here's a link to the never-ending "Blues Jr. Mafia" thread on the Fender Discussion Page: http://www.fenderforum.com/forum.html?db=&topic_number=94318&offset=6786 (you may have to register to see the thread).

IRRC the C12N clone like a 12F150T will sound more like a Blackface Fender - except the Blues Jr. isn't a Blackface by any stretch of the imagination. I think that the Blue Dog has more bass response (bigger magnet & larger voice coil). I know it has a very nice chime/bell tone to it. The Weber California is LOUD and uncolored - perfect if you want really clean without twang. Haven't tried anything other than those two. Best upgrade ever in terms of benefit per dollar IMHO.

P.S. Ted Weber doesn't seem to be taking phone calls much these days, but he responds to email really fast most of the time.

Re: speaker upgrade for a blues jnr

ok, and just so i dont go and buy the wrong thing...

the blues junior is 15W and 8 ohms

does that mean i nead a 15W 8 ohm speaker? can i use a 25W speaker or will it never hit the "sweet spot" since it will never be driven near the max or whats the deal?

and im guessing i should stick to a 8 ohm speaker

It has to be 8 ohms and at least 15 watts, but a 30 watt would work fine.
