Speaker Wire

What wire do you guys use?

I'm gonna be rewiring 2 cabs & need to get some wire....

22, 18, 14 gauge....Monster Cable....?????

I would imagine the proper gauge from Home Depot will do the trick as opposed to the 50ft. roll from Stew-Mac or Mojo ....????

Re: Speaker Wire

There's a lot of voodoo hype over wire. I don't take much stock in it myself. For a guitar cord...yeah I'll spend a bit more for a good one. But for speaker level signals, no. For wire inside your cab 14 from the spool at the hardware store should do you good...12 would be a bit better.

Re: Speaker Wire

On this board there is the opinion that Speaker wire does not affect tone! If you knbow how much current flows thru from amp to speaker you would care about it ;)
I can't stand the light bulb cable opinion! If you pay >1000$ for a amp you can pay 20$ for some wires!

I would use the clear (you can see the copper) and thick HiFi Wire for the cab maybe

Re: Speaker Wire

I'd think anything bigger than 14 gauge would put unnecessary strain on the speaker tabs, just get 14-18 and you'll be fine.

Re: Speaker Wire

Don't shell out for the "monster" stuff...it's just NOT worth it.

Get some 12 or 14 guage speaker cable or lamp cord from the hardware store & use that.

Copper is copper, it's about the size of the pipe.

Oxygen free my ass...when was the last time you were able to suck air through a cable?!

:laugh2:

Re: Speaker Wire

BTW, I do & can hear a difference in some speaker cables...even with a blind A/B.

Unless one of the cables is just cheap crap the differences are usually subtle at best.

Having said that...depending on how crazy you wanna' go with it you might want to try a few different types of speaker cable & see if you have a preference.

I rewired my cabs with some old Ernie Ball stuff I had around that had already been clipped on one end. There was a marked improvement over the 20 or 22 guage wire that was in cabs...would something else be "better?"

Maybe.

But it's WAY hipper then it was so I called it a day & haven't really thought twice about it.

Re: Speaker Wire

Thanks fellas....I didn't think there would be a major problem just grabbing some at the Home Depot, but I've seen guys using Monster Cable & wonderred if there would be a difference.

There might be & probably is.

I've got a 6' monster 1000 series speaker cable that they gave to me YEARS ago when I worked retail at Guitarget for about 30 seconds...they came in & gave everyone 3-4 of the things...

I tried it against a regular old 6' speaker cable, nothing crazy...like a $15 ProCo or whatever & absolutly heard a difference!

Now the question is...with at about $100 difference in the cost of the cables, what's that difference REALLY worth?

$100+?

Not IMO. But I'm working stiff...if I was a 'blooze lawyer' or something I'd probably laugh about it & buy 'em like a lemming.

If they didn't give those things away I wouldn't have any monster cables.

Just get good cable!

Re: Speaker Wire

Terry....I want to say that when Scott Splawn re-did my Marshall cab, he used 18 guage wire. I know it was super heavy duty, and he prefer's it that way for sound transference.

I just figure, he makes killer amps and cabs, so whatever he says is good by me.

Re: Speaker Wire

Well, since there is so little distance between the connection terminals and the speaker lugs in a cab, you won't need a thick, expensive cable.

Maybe I'll shoot him an e-mail just asking what gauge he uses... WOW,there's a novel idea :smack:
