Speaker Wires

OK. So I just ordered my 4 greenbacks and 2 vintage 30s for my 4x12 and 2x12 cabs. I have wiring diagrams for how I want them wired but I was wondering if there is a recommended type of wire to use. Let me know. Can I just go to radio shack and get some speaker wire or is there something that better matches the application?

I guess I'll ask about solder as well. I'll be buying an iron for this project so I would love to hear if there are any recommedations on that and on the actual solder material.

I will post pics once I get things done.

Rock on.

Re: Speaker Wires

I use radio shack wire, seems fine with my 500 watt power amp to my 4x10.

I think certain radio shack COMPONENTS may be noisy, but the speaker wire there seems fine.

If you are just using a typical 50-100 watt amp then you probably won't even need a very thick gauge either, but I have no clue as to any guidelines for what gauge to use for however high of wattage you have.

Re: Speaker Wires

I use 16 guage stranded copper speaker wire from radio shack for my cab.

Also, you shouldn't need a soldering iron for wiring up a cab. All you need are some female connectors that will fit prongs on your speakers. You just need some wire strippers/crimpers.

depends on how much wear and tear you put on your equipment. if play a lot of shows and are throwing your cabinet in and out of a trailer/van all the time, those can come loose. yeah, it isn't likey that they will, but i've seen it happen. soldering the wires to the speakers is just a good way to be sure the suckers aren't going to come loose.

to be fair though, you really have to be rough on your gear for that to happen. most likely it will be fine either way.
