Speakers and Ohms...School me...

Alright so I bought a new BlackStar HT-20 and I although the amp sounds significantly better then my stock Hot Rod Deluxe I immediately want to swap out the Celestion Rocket 50 for a better speaker. Preferably a WGS Green Beret as it is a Vintage 30 type speaker that is ACTUALLY affordable right now. I am also considering a couple different speakers from Eminence as well (non-alnico) such as the private jack, cannibis rex and a few others. Still undecided...

But, alas, I know tons about guitars, pickups, hardware... I know jack about amps. Someone school me on how Ohms affect speakers and how to ensure I am buying the correct (8 ohm or 16 ohm) speaker for my amp...

My amp has the option for 1x16ohms, and 1x8ohms/2x16ohms... am I right in thinking that I should buy a 16ohm speaker then?

Thanks guys.

Re: Speakers and Ohms...School me...

simplest thing is to match the new speaker's impedance to that of the speaker being replaced ... 8 ohm out? 8 ohm in ... simple

if you are going to use only a single speaker, a single 8 ohm speaker is probably best

Re: Speakers and Ohms...School me...

I have to disagree. Seems the amp will drive either 8 or 16 but not 4. So if you put a single 16 in there you still have the option to run a single 16 extension as well. Plus there's the thinking that using the 16 ohm tap uses the whole output transformer thus giving a wee bit better sound.

K, thanks for the tip... looks like I will be looking at 16ohm then...

I think green beret is a green back clone, not v30

Okay so is the disparity of my amp being a 20 watt amp and that speaker being rated for 60 watts going to affect the tone? Will I be able to drive it enough?

Re: Speakers and Ohms...School me...

It will be fine. The general rule is to have speakers/cabs rated for at least double the amp output.

i would also get a 16 ohm speaker

Re: Speakers and Ohms...School me...

I don't think a Vintage 30 and a Greenback sound very close. I think you should look into which one you really want before you buy either.
