Speakers (Eminence) For Twin Reverb?

Hey fellas, i have decided to re-vamp my 69' silverface Twin Reverb. In the process, i'm looking for some new speakers. From all the hooplah and generally good reviews for those new Eminence speakers, i thought it might be good to go with 2 of those for this amp, especially since many of them have good wattage ratings

i guess it would be good to go with the Patriot series? the Texas Heat, Red White and Blues, and Swamp thing look like good canidates. As do maybe the Wizard or Tonker from the redcoat series. I havent done a whole lot of research on these, so those are just some starting points. Do any of you have experience with these speakers, or read reviews of them sounding good with blackface/silverface Fenders? I'm looking for a warm sound with a tight bass sound, i dont like an overabundance of bass since i'm a rhythm guitarist and like to keep the sound "neat", and i also like chimey highs, not too "hard" sounding treble.

obviously speakers only play a partial role in the whole tone, but i'm just looking for some experience with any of those new eminence speakers and maybe some suggestions from those of you that are familiar with Twin Reverbs.

Thanks in Advance

I'd go for the Wizard or Governor myself...or one of each. That'd be like mixing a G12H30 and a Vintage 30. Great combo. The Redcoat series sounds a little more "American" than the Celestion's they are based on...don't be afraid of them. Lew

cool. i am afraid i dont even really know what makes a speaker sound american or british :smack: obviously i know the american amp sound as compared to the british sound, thats obvious. but i wasnt really aware that speakers really could sound either way.

To me, a "British" speaker gets that Vox/Marshall sound. You know: kind of chunky and a little bit more of a honk to the mids than USA speakers from the 60's. The classic Beatles and Hendrix/Clapton 60's tone as opposed to the sound of Mike Bloomfield or BB King or the Beach Boys or the Ventures! :laugh2:

what...replacing original JBL's....blasphemy!

For some reason I've seen the word blasphemy thrown about more and more today alone then any other day for some reason, not just on the forum, but in my normal life too.

I've used the Tonkers in a closed back 2x12. For an amp I used a '78 Hiwatt DR504, and a '68 Fender Bassman. Excellent cleans with both amps, very nice low end for a 2x12. I especially liked the Tonkers with the Bassman. When cranking the Bassman with a Tele equiped w/DM Twang Kings, it was nice and tight. I had mixed feelings regarding the overdriven sound (I either cranked the amp, or used a RI Maxon 808 OD). I'm guessing that's because my personal preference when it comes to overdriven sounds is a speaker that breaks up quickly. So it might be a nice speaker if you like to keep it clean. Regarding your preference for a bit less low end, your open back combo will probably have less pronounced lows.

Whan I bought my Twin it had the original Oxfords in it and I hated it...I had always heard that JBL's were the last word in speakers for a BF/SF Twin so I saved my money to be able to buy a set of orange frame JBL's...got them put in and had them back with in a day and a half...too damn bright bordereing on brittle, no mids to speak of even the bass ws kind of hard sounding not to mention that they made the amp weight a ton more than it did before. About 2 years later I tried another Twin with JBL's...hated it too. You can have ALL the JBL's you want my friend...

well, i like the sound of JBLs, but i'm maybe lookin for something with more mids and chimey highs. The Jbls have a very clean sound, sort of hi-fi, with lots of highs and lows. and yes, they make the amp seem to be frickin 200lbs!

With a few BF Twins I've had, I had good luck with Greenbacks...as long as you don't dime it. Mellows out the Buck Owens Twin highend...Eminence makes a clone, but I don't know the model. Agree with you about the JBL's---the last thing those amps need is more highs...

I feel the exact same way about JBL's...why am I not surprised?:)

Re: Speakers (Eminence) For Twin Reverb?

if i want some more mids from the twin, should i go with a wizards or govenors (or a mix) like Lew suggested? anybody else have any thoughts/experience with putting british type speakers with an old Fender amp?

Re: Speakers (Eminence) For Twin Reverb?

Well, I don't know if this qualifies, but I've got a custom made 59 tweed bassman in a 2x12 cabinet. When I put it through my Crate Blue Voodoo 4X12 with a V30/G12H30 X pattern, it sounded HUGE and really grooved the Hendrix and SRV thing with my strats. Incredible sound with that cab.

That seems very smart. I think the mix (of speakers, and also of the Brit and American thing) will be very cool.

Re: Speakers (Eminence) For Twin Reverb?

One Tonker and one Governor
note: your amp will weigh several pounds more due to the large magnets on these speakers.

governors are known for tight bass, lots of mids, and chimey highs

i think they're right up your alley

wizards might be a little too loose sounding for you, i love them but they're definately not for everyone

Re: Speakers (Eminence) For Twin Reverb?

Just put 2 Govs and 2 Wizards in my half stack, by LEWs advice, iy KIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIlllllllllllllsssssssssssssssssss

"if you dont play JBL's, you're not playing clean enough!"

I live by their 15" speakers.
