i have 2 AC 30's and both have alnico blues but i wanna try something different and was looking at either the G12 greenbacks or the 75hz G12H anny. what do you think would fit a u2 ish style the best? i play with lots of delay's and overdrives and reverbs. im looking for a pronounced top end without being harsh, meating mids and tight bass.

Re: speakers for an ac-30

You really have THE BEST speaker for a Vox already IMHO...also, the sond you are asking about "pronounced top end without being harsh, meaty mids and tight bass" is really a Celestion alnico all the way.

If you are dead set on trying something differnet I'd go with Greenbacks...I do like Greenbacks in an AC-30...it's not the classic Vox sound but it is a good sound howeverit's not really a speaker thats known for tight bass...

Maybe one Alnico and one Greenback...

Re: speakers for an ac-30

I would also say the GB does not have tight bass. The g12h30 will give you a fat, clear bass with a lil less breakup, but a tone in the same kinda vein as the greenback

Re: speakers for an ac-30

If u can find an old silver alnico that would be nice. I like the G12H30 and Greenback combo but for chime and u2 style blues are great

Re: speakers for an ac-30

We use a 2 x 12 with a Weber Blue, 50 watt, ceramic, and a Eminence Red Fang.
If your location was in your profile.......

Re: speakers for an ac-30

I'd stick with the blues personally. Those really are the best speakers for a vox amp.

Re: speakers for an ac-30

i know that i have the best speakers for an AC30 but i want a different tone since i have "2" AC30's im gonna keep my TBX with the blues and mod my CC2X with something of a different flavor then blues. vox amps take very well to certain speakers but also reject alot of them. i think i may just go the greenback route but have trouble deciding weather to go with the greenbacks or G12H-30's 75hz.

greenbacks or G12H-30's 75hz
Like I said before I'd go both its the same setup as Matchless DC-30 cabs and that combo has more chunk and bass and handles marshallish overdrives better.

Re: speakers for an ac-30

Greenbacks could be an interesting choice... I haven't put my set in the AC30 cab but I have plugged my AC30 into the THD 2x12 with GB's and I recall the midrange being 'thicker' or more 'congested' then the Blues.

Honestly for something different but cool I'd go with the alnico Tone Tubbys. All the magic swirl of the blues with extended bottom end range & not as quick to break up. If you use a lot of effects (U2 style) then they might be the best choice if you dig the sound... they aren't as quick to fall apart as GB's or Blue's. I have blues in my AC30TBX as well and they won't take the octave boxes & crazy filters but the TT's will. If/when I pop the blues that's what I'm getting.

Re: speakers for an ac-30

i hear the mid range of the gb vs the blues the same way you do, more congested which isnt a bad thing in all cases. the blues really are just magical.

i do love the tone tubby alnico too.

between the g12m and g12h i hear the g12m as being smoother on the top and woodier in the mids with a soft bottom. the g12h being more aggressive with more bottom and louder
