Speakers

Just out of curiosity, what elements combine to give a speaker a (supposed) different flavor? Some speakers, like the Eminence Patriot series Texas Heat claim to deliver a southern-rock sound while The Tonkerlite is Blues, Southern Rock and Country.

What I know about speakers is how to plug them in or solder them up and that's pretty much it.

This'd be a great thread to teach and learn about something we all use but don't know about like the rest of our gear. The question applies to the other speaker applications as well. Thanks :) -Rod-

Re: Speakers

You should ask Anthony at Eminence.com that question. he would give you a great answer!
Of course it onvolves an EQ shift of mids and treble and bass, and the parameters ionvolved can be one one hand more favorable to blues ( smooth, chimey) or on the other more inclined to Classic rock ( edgy, biting and gritty)..somehting like that I guess.

Re: Speakers

i reckon its all about eq curve and if it suits the sound you are after. Genre is a different matter entirely.

Re: Speakers

I guess it's a science all it's own. I'm curious as to the how's of it...different materials, components, where magnet size comes in, wattage requirements, etc. I did do some reading on Eminence's site last night before I posted but it opened up more questions than it answered. -Rod-

Re: Speakers

I had a 3 day class a few years back from Thiel Loudspeakers. My head exploded about halfway through Day 1. There is a TON of math/science that goes into modern loudspeaker design!

Re: Speakers

Yeah I gathered that looking through spec sheets. Interesting that running speakers with, say, 5+ x the wattage of your amp is a really bad idea. 20w into 75w speakers is okay, but into 150w, no no and no. I'd like to learn some of this without the risk of turning into a zombie or brains leaking out my ears. -Rod-

Re: Speakers

you can run 20w into a big speaker no problems. The wattage of the speaker is only an indicator of how much energy (=heat generated from movement) it can handle without risking burning out.

fwiw..i currently run my 22w amp thru a 75watt speaker and i love it, but id be quite happy to run it thru a 150w speaker. ive tried it thru a 100w speaker and it was fine. Ive got some 150w texas heats too, but i dont want to do the rewiring required to thry them out with that amp. Generally, the higher the wattage, the less bright, but more powerful it will sound in the low end...kinda like hot pickups.
Im quite picky with speakers cos its the part that the crowd are actually hearing.

Whats your amp, what do you currently hear from it and what would you like to change?

Re: Speakers

A lot of the tone variation comes from the slant/pitch of the cone. Along with it's depth, height, and grade. Complicated stuff for sure as mentioned.
