Spicing up a TB-4

I have quite a few Jacksons and Charvels, and with this comes quite a few TB-4's. I really like the JB and won't be getting rid of all of them. The best sounding ones I'll leave alone.

I have magnets and pole pieces on the way, but I'm curious as to the results others have got. I have a JB2 in a MIJ Charvel San Dimas and like it. I'm thinking of slipping an A8 or a C8 into the bridge of an SL2H.

Also, do the DD, Invader, and JB share the same coils or not? For the longest time I heard they did, but then in another thread someone said the JB has a different wind than the DD and Invader.

Thanks

Re: Spicing up a TB-4

I swap in a RCA5 to make the production JB more like the Antiquity JB.

Re: Spicing up a TB-4

I have done many swaps of magnets on the JB. I think the wind has such a unique character that magnet swaps are like different flavors of vanilla. In other words, you will probably like results the swaps give you if you like the JB If you don't, a swap won't change your mind.

This thread i started last year might help you. I ended up going with the the RCA5 in my JB and I've done that swap a few times in the past and always liked the results in my Strat style guitars . FWIW I have a JB with the stock polished A5 in one guitar and i really like it as well but I`ve been tempted to put a RCA5 in it

Re: Spicing up a TB-4

Wire one in parallel and put it in the neck. Now that's a unique voicing.

Re: Spicing up a TB-4

You guys are killing me. I didn't buy the RCA5 because I thought it would be too similar to the regular A5. I did get a UOA5 however.

They are very similar. The RC just gives it a little more edge.

I haven’t tried the JB with a UOA5

Re: Spicing up a TB-4

IME roughcast in the JB smoothed all the spikes so it was a bit more even sounding and enabled me to use the volume control more. Mine sounded good clean and distorted using roughcast.

Re: Spicing up a TB-4

I'm using a pair of JB (MJ wound) screw coils on a brass baseplate with an alnico 2 mag from a CC and 12 shortened fillister screws in an Epi Nighthawk RI. It splits VERY well and blends with the middle single for a very stratty tone. When in full humbucker mode, it's less spikey than a normal JB, but you can still tell that it's in the JB ballpark with clear highs and a fat midrange honk.
