Re: Spider II or Crate GLX

I typically avoid Crates like they're the plague...something about 'em just sounds terrible to me.

I've played the Spider II a few times and I love it. It sucks that you have to shell out an additional $120 just for the control pedal and stuff, but that's only an issue if you're gigging. I wanna get it so I have a crazy-cool amp to play in my bedroom so I don't have to move my amp and cab around.

I'm not sure how to say this...umm....Crate Sucks.....yeah, that'll do it...

I'll qualify that by saying that some people do like thier pricier tube amps, but I've never played a Crate that I could even remotely get a sound I liked out of. I vote spider. Its a pretty versatile little amp with a lot of usable tones. Its not a tone monster, but you get a lot for your money.

Re: Spider II or Crate GLX

i think the crate glx series is very good....i own a glx 212 myself and its a killer amp ...i admit its not a full tube sound like everyone yearns for but the crate glx series have a flexwave tube pre amp simulator which makes it sound closer to a tube amp. also it can remember which effects u set for each channel the only thing that u cant have different is the levels which isnt much of a loss.

Re: Spider II or Crate GLX

what the hell is "bump"? I'm guessing you're bumping your thread to the top of the list in desperate hopes of a reply... well here you go!!

I would go with a Line6 Spider II, because you can get so much out of it. And I heard the cleans were amazing too.

Re: Spider II or Crate GLX

Lots of guys I know who have the Vetta, have the Spider II (not the I) as a backup or practice amp. Same technology, but really pared down in models and effects.

Re: Spider II or Crate GLX

I've never been a fan of Crate amps. They just don't sound right to me. My own main guitar amp system is an amalgam of archaic pieces, but they're consistent, so I like them. I do own a Spyder 112 (one of the earlier series) and I use it when my band is working somewhere where I don't need 160 watts and it's a great sounding amp. In fact, were I touring and could only take one amp, or were on a cruise ship (hey, it could happen), that's the amp I'd be using.

Re: Spider II or Crate GLX

the spider II is fun as hell to mess around with all them effects, and sounds pretty good to me

Re: Spider II or Crate GLX

I don't like either amps... The Line 6 is somewhat beter but still cold and lifeless sounding IMO.

I'd hunt around on ebay for a used Flextone II 1x12 combo or get a Behringer Vampire, both of those amps sound much better than the spider does.

I had a responce, but this threads been bumped too many times for me to give it....

Re: Spider II or Crate GLX

Here's some advice: use the "search" function.

...go for the Spider, by the way. Or save up a couple of bucks and buy a used Vetta II on ebay.

+1.

If you want good cleans well the Spider will do that. AFAIC tho the marshall models are horrendous...thin , glitchy (digital) and sterile. I'm convinced the guys at line 6 have never actually ever heard a good Marshall. I didn't find the flextone or Vetta marshall models that much better.

I would also recommend the Behringers or a Vox Valvetronix in similar pricing. The VOX's Marshall models are not "right" either but are alot better than the Spider. Plus the Soldano and Recto models are pretty durn good with some volume behind them. The Behringers are quite good too for the $.
