Spider Valve, anyone?

You may have seen me posting tons of threads over the past few months about looking for a new amp to replace my Spider IV 30w. Now, I'm not looking for this to turn into a "there's better amps out there thread", I'm just wondering if any of you guys have tried 'em and how it compares to the all digital Spiders. Rock on. :headbang:

Re: Spider Valve, anyone?

Not telling to go elsewhere...but...the Vox modeling amps are pretty sick...

Re: Spider Valve, anyone?

Aren't the valve versions a collaboration with Bogner Amps?
Where Bogner made the power section

Re: Spider Valve, anyone?

those are not meant for bedroom playing, they're damn loud. I'd go for a DT25 instead

Really, the Spider Valves?

I would, but don't have the cash right now. May just save up all the way for a Mesa Boogie. :)

Re: Spider Valve, anyone?

I've tried one. It was meh. Even my Digitech RP1000 straight into a tube power amp with no cab emulation on does a better job.

Re: Spider Valve, anyone?

I have a Spider Valve 2x12, the original series. As a complete package, it is just OK. The software models are a bit too tight for my taste - one of the big mods fashionable when it came out was a tube-based mod to the input/preamp section (I am not an expert) - my SV doesn't have this.

But here's where it gets interesting - the spider valve is amazing as a tube preamp with celestion V30s. I run a Pod HD into it via the effects loop, and it slays. 100%. I have some great "old school" amps, and the combo of a Pod HD and Spider Valve is hard to beat.

Re: Spider Valve, anyone?

Tried them a few times back when I was shopping for tube amps and upgrading from using a POD X3 Live back in the day...

I remember being very underwhelmed and disappointed with them! They just didn't have the response nor dynamics that I expected a tube amp to have. They sounded warmer and high gain was a bit more pleasant than just a regular old Spider II from back then, but the responsiveness was kind of the same drill: playing on a gain channel with full overdrive sounds alright, harmonics were OK but not fat enough, and rolling down the volume knob to clean up was not an option. Unlike other tube amps, rolling down the volume didn't really clean up all that much, it still sounds quite distorted, but just thinner and attenuated treble and bass, leaving you with a muddy mid honk

I would highly recommend putting your hard earned money elsewhere
