Spina/StratDeluxer Modded 847 Wah!

Well I've had this baby for over a year and I figured it was well over due for a quick review!

This pedal was originally modded for Lew, but when I bought it John gave it the once over and tweaked a little further. The pedal now has a Fulltone pot, Fulltone inductor, tweaked unity volume, external gain and Q pots, and whatever other magic John did while he was in there!

First up, this thing has to be the smoothest sounding wah I've ever heard!

I used it through my old SS Peavey rig, and since November through my Orange Rockerverb 50! And man, I tell ya, this thing is sweet either way! Clean or distorted this thing just sings! Pure tone! Not a crackle or scratch in a year of playing! ...oh, and did I mention it was smooth?!

I was using a Cry Baby prior to getting this wah, and the difference was like being helped out of the gutter by Angelina Jolie and Salma Hayek, and taken home for a hot bath! Bliss! :fingersx:

If anyone is making do with a POS CryBaby, DON'T! Talk to John/Stratdeluxer and see what he can do for you!

BTW I don't work for John incase you were wondering; just a VERY satisfied customer!

Thanks John!

Thanks for the review and glad you like the wah....I'm now going to get swamped with wah mod requests, and the funny thing is,I thought I wasn't going to mod wahs anymore....Only because the parts are expensive and then I have to add labor and shipping...If a guy feels it's worth the money,I guess I still owe to all of you to mod the wahs then...:13: :fingersx:

Hurray! I still have a chance to get a wah modded once I get one :smokin:

Re: Spina/StratDeluxer Modded 847 Wah!

I can also vouch for the Spina 847. He modded my Vox847 and it is beautiful, and the envy of mates with all kinds of wahs from jimi hendrix sigs, teese picture wahs and the crybaby from hell.
His customer service is also second to none.

Please only get either the 847 or the 848 Vox.....I hate modding newer CryBaby pedals...

Don't worry, I don't like the newer Crybaby pedals anyway, and it being a Vox pedal gives it some vintage vibe right there :fingersx:

Re: Spina/StratDeluxer Modded 847 Wah!

Are the Vox's easier to mod than the newer Crybaby's then? I've always thought the CB's were extremely easy to mod?

Re: Spina/StratDeluxer Modded 847 Wah!

I have a Spina/Stratdeluxer modded Vox 847 wah and love it :)

The Vox is alot easier to mod and it has the jacks off the circuit board which I much prefer...The Vox looks way cooler and just has the whole vibe of an earlier wah...:)

Re: Spina/StratDeluxer Modded 847 Wah!

I've got a Vox 847 and an 848 that John modded, and they both sound killer.

Re: Spina/StratDeluxer Modded 847 Wah!

Thanks guys....I see myself getting swamped again soon with wahs! LOL....It was Boss DS1s and TS9s there for awhile and no wahs....Now it'll be wahs...Appreciate the nice comments from all,but mostly appreciate the trust you guys have had in me and letting me inside of your effects pedals...

Still glad to be a part of such a great forum, loaded with great people as I've stated several times before!:beerchug:

Re: Spina/StratDeluxer Modded 847 Wah!

StratDeluxer,

Would you mind telling me/us what exactly you do to an 847 to soup it up? Is it just component swapping (and if so what do you change) or are there any major changes to the circuit? A guide to modifying wahs would be great, and less work than all of us sending you pedals...:fingersx:

I've spent way too many hours with soldering iron in hand to just give away "all" my specifics....Basically if you get the right inductor and a pot that has the correct sweep, you're half way there...After that it's knowing what type of caps to use and knowing where to replace components to re-tune the wah...A wah is just a filter and so the changes, change the way the wah sounds and sweeps..I also add things like a gain pot, adjustable Q,and sometimes a unity gain volume control depending on what a guy wants...I just don't charge enough for all the work involved and I don't feel it would be fair to myself to just show you how to do it...Hope you understand...:13:

Thank you brother Brow! Glad it's still working..:laugh2:

It is :laugh2: Ever since you were kind enough to send me the parts over from Florida to the UK to try and diagnose it's problem, it's worked great :)

Excellent, well you know I stand behind my work...Regardless of where you live! :27: :laugh2: So far your wah is the only one that had to have a Fulltone pot replaced..

there are quite a few wah mod guides already on the net

they will give you the basics ... the difference with John's mods is that he's used his experience modding, plus his ears, to tune the circuit so they are more vocal and full sounding

for what little he charges, I agree that he'd be cheating himself by posting hours of knowledge he's gained

personally, I kind of hate messing with those little boards :)

Yup, you do stand behind your work mate, and I thank you for it :)

As regards mine being the only 1 that needed a new Fulltone pot, you know what they say: There's 1 in every crowd and they always find me :D

Re: Spina/StratDeluxer Modded 847 Wah!

STOP IT!!! All this talk about good sounding wah pedals has gassing fo a ood wah!

I like my Vox ok but I hate that it's not true bypass, I dislike the fact that it runs only on batteries and it just doesn't have THE TONE...I want my Wah to sound like Jeff Becks wah sounded in the early days like Truth and Beck Ola...

You're welcome to send it to me Christian...True Bypass and a buffered power supply are part of the fix for the 847 that I incorporate and you can install the pot and inductor yourself? You're capable enough...
