splawn quick rod eruption clip

well, i'm on vaca for the next 2 weeks...one of my goals was to work my way through the hard parts of "eruption" now that i have some free time....i've been trying to learn this tune in it's entirety ever since i was 13 (i'm 37)...the tapping outro stuff i already knew...

i recorded this really quick yesterday, the sound quality is horrible but i think you can get the idea...

i know it's not perfect but i think it's kinda close at least...closer than i've ever come before.

would welcome constructive criticism

Re: splawn quick rod eruption clip

That's a great stab at a very difficult piece! What effect did you use on that?

Like you, I've been toying with Eruption ever since I first heard it, and no matter how close I get it, it still isn't nailed 100%.....I mean after all, you're never going to play it exactly like the guy who wrote it. There's not much criticism, since it's tricky to play it note for note......the only thing I'd say is get the phrasing and # of of notes per string to be more exact.

One of these days, I'm gonna sit down with that thing for a whole weekend
and try and figure out the parts that I've always been stuck on. I'd love to be able to play it note for note. I could scare all the kids in the guitar stores!! hahaha

hey what's up gear?,
yeah that piece is so freeform that you can spend your whole life trying to learn it and still not get it exact...i'm actually kinda glad i got it worked up to at least that...it could probably fool some people at a bar...lol!...i know what you mean about phrasing and # of notes...i need to sit down and try to play along with it...i kinda just listened to it and went from there...there's some parts that just floor me still...

anyway, the effects are reverb and a little delay from an alesis midiverb 4 and then the phase 90 is on but at set at it's most minimal level...

thanks for responding

Re: splawn quick rod eruption clip

that's a pretty good whack at it. I'd dry the effects up a lot more. Also, use a thinner pick. Ed gave me some of his picks when I met him and they're pretty flexible, which helps with getting the right sound for the trem picking.

I knew a local kid back in the late 80s that had it down perfect. I mean EXACT. Even Ed doesn't replicate it exactly.

I learned a ton of Ed as a kid, but never touched Eruption. Always thought it was too obvious and over-copied. It's kind of the 'Stairway' of unaccompanied guitar solos.

One thing I've though of, but never actually purchased, is a Phrase Trainer CD player....so you can slow the CD down to a crawl, but still have it in pitch.

Maybe I should ask for one of those for Krissmas, so I can tear into some of those players with blinding chops, and decipher a lot more. I'd love to slow Eruption WAY down, and hear some of those passing notes and phrases that get kinda blurred at normal speed.

If you end up doing that, post it for the masses! That's another song I have a goal to play.

No way! There are a ton of CT forum guys apparently, more than I originally thought there were. I swear I've heard your bands name before, maybe on WCCC's "what the hell's going on" or something. Derby isnt too far from where I live on the border of Wolcott... if your from Derby, you must have gone to Banko's in Ansonia? They're fixing the group loop on my Agile Les Paul right now (attemped Jimmy Paige wiring). When I get home from college today I'll check out your band's site.

I don't know if you've ever played with any blues bands, but have you ever played/heard of the Johnny I band? He's my guitar teacher.

Yeah, John is a blues guy, Beef Stew plays him on WCCC on the sunday night blues occasionally, he's big into Stevie Ray Vaughn and his band covers a ton of SRV and Double Trouble tunes.

I know a quicker way Joneser. If you haven't already got it get yourself a copy of Audacity and rip eruption to a wav and you can slow it down in audacity for free.
EDIT: It's the "Change Tempo" option in the effect menu.

Re: splawn quick rod eruption clip

That amp sounds so sweet, how are the clean tones? Can you give me a link for their site. And if you don't mind me asking, how much does the head roughly cost? These amps always fall back into my view of the perfect amp.
