Spontaneous Warmoth Build...Something A Bit Different!

Re: Spontaneous Warmoth Build...Something A Bit Different!

...cheap-China-Strat-wanna-be.

Ouch! But thank you for your input.

Another option I had originally considered was using the stock Tele guard and creating an oversized chrome "pickup ring" that would fill in the space between the Floyd and the pickguard to mimic the large, rectangular bridge plate of the regular Tele.

However, I think that way is a bit less flattering overall...too bulky and distracting. Here's a visual mock-up with the Tele PG and a custom pickup plate (excuse my crappy photoshop skills):

I think I like the fully custom PG a lot better. Thoughts?

Both designs have their charms, but I'd lean towards the Tele pickguard if you're using a bridge humbucker and the new pickguard if you're using a single coil.

My two cents; this looks boutique and retro while channeling the Kramer E.E. Pro I, Jeff Beck's Charvel Spectrum and the more recent Fender Pawn Shop '51.

I appreciate that. I think you totally get it ;)

Definitely sticking with a single coil in the bridge spot.

In fact, I'm going to go with white singles in the neck and middle with a black single in the bridge spot as a subtle homage to the old-school Yamaha Pacificas :)

I still like the Tele guard but without the chrome ring on the bridge pup.

So, this project hit a HUGE snag when fellow member Itsabass (whom I noticed has been logging in again recently!) offered to help make a custom pickguard for me and then stole $100+ worth of materials and the original template I had made.

But I have GREAT news...after 3 years of delays, this crazy cool project is back on the table!

This time, I'm going with a brand new Fender Player Series maple neck, a trio of black SD "Live Wire Classic II" pickups, and...get ready for it...a BLACK pickguard!

Once again, the guard is the only thing I'm stuck waiting for, but it feels good to know this oddball hot-rod will finally become a reality!

Here's the basic idea (without the pickups/hardware/Fender neck):

I agree that's shitty, I consider myself warned. I think the black pickguard looks better than the pearloid one. What kind of electronic setup are you going to use (pots, switch)?

Why the change of the neck?

I sold off the Warhead neck thinking I was just going to part out the project, but my wife convinced me to see it through.

I got the Fender neck at a decent price. It comes factory finished, set up for a locking nut, and will make it look somewhat like a real Fender, so there's that.

I do like the Warhead shape, though, especially with the "hybrid" styling

Gonna wire it up using an EMG quick-connect kit, since the LiveWire Classic II's use the same 3-pin connectors and 25K pots as EMGs.

The body came routed for a battery box on back and the pickup routs are EMG-style (i.e. there's no room for the triangular "Strat" style baseplate on the pickups), so I have to stick with actives, which is fine by me!

Control-wise, I'm going with a simple "Tele" style volume/tone and a 5-way switch.

I am considering adding an EMG SPC for some added flexibility.

The last Warmoth I built (Velocity body) had a Warhead headstock. I really dig it.
