Square holes on humbucker tops

Maybe a dumb question, but:
Somebody who knows what the square holes in the plastic on the top of most SD humbuckers is for (revealing something red underneath)?
Something due to production techniques, an indication (polarity?), measuring points...?

Re: Square holes on humbucker tops

probably just to let air in/ idk if a hot pickup actually gets hot, but yeah

Re: Square holes on humbucker tops

It isn't just SD. Gibsons have those also, and most other pups I've seen. I've always assumed it was where a small pin went from the winding machine to prevent the bobbin spinning on the holder. But thats just a guess.

+2, that's what I always thought it was for....only thought it was to keep the bobbin from spinning OFF the winder..lol

Re: Square holes on humbucker tops

but to be honest though, that small holes really turn me of, hehe i wish they were just plain flat without the holes. well that's just me

Re: Square holes on humbucker tops

My guess is it was just a way for the winder to know when the bobbin was getting close to full.
