Squier '51 / P90 / GFS Mean 90 song

ImmortalSix

John Mayer's Mankini
Here's a clip of the GFS Mean 90 bridge pickup in my recently rebuilt Squier '51

Recorded with my modded to oblivion Squier '51, my 197X P Bass, Hotstepper, and Line6 TonePort GX --- guitar on (oddly enough) Roland JC-120 model with heavy compression.

Listen to the beautiful compressed and clear and full tone I am getting out of this pickup. It's my go-to for both gigging and recording right now, it sounds so awesome.

I do have a little bit of "Squier shame" when I gig with it though!

i love the tone and playing! that mean 90 sounds great, lots of bite and warmth. bass isn't too heavy either, fits together very well.

Thanks --- yeah, I am writing 4 and 5 chord stuff like this all the time and recording it, primarily so I don't forget the idea. One of these days I will have a whole pile of half-baked song ideas that other musicians can help me develop totally.

Thanks --- this clip was primarily to showcase the Mean 90 --- and that although hot and middy, with the right volume and tone knob position and right amp settings, it can sound pretty thick and delicious for this style of soft rock playing.

I really love that style of playing for some odd reason --- the guitar part in a band where you never think about the guitar part unless you're a player; like the guitarist in a piano-rock band. I always cite Gavin DeGraw's material here --- his guitar player is great at creating subtle beauty in a guitar part, being neither at the front of the mix nor overly ornate.

Go here and scroll down to find "We Belong Together" --- listen to that intro riff; then the soft clean stuff in the verses --- sounds like P90's to me! I'm trying to capture that same "competent elegance" without being showy.

I used to record and mix bass too heavy and too compressed --- after I got called out on it a few times (thank you SDUGF!) I started recording with a more "open" bass tone. Sounds a little less like a robot now

Thanks for the feedback, guys!

Very cool! I love the crunchy tone, very lively. I would say the bass track is a bit too high in the mix though. Let the guitar get some more elbow space. ;)
