Squier Affinity or Fender Mexican which worth upgrade?

I want to buy an strat and I'll end up upgrading with Seymour/CTS either way....
is the squier worth such investment? I am not sure if there's a huge difference in the neck profile, comfort is my major concern

The Mex has a full thickness body at 1 3/4" and the Affinities are 1 1/2". So if you want a totally "legit" Strat, get the Mex. But I have 2 Affinities that I mod and love them. The thinner body is more rawk to me. Also if you get a rosewood Affinity, the neck is unfinished which I like. For maple, it's a thin satin finish. Some key differences that are "legit" for the Mex, but can be nice and even desirable for the Affinity.

There is a huge difference in the neck, IMO. The Mex neck will be meatier, thicker and most importantly, more stable.

As an owner of both a pimped-out Affinity Strat and a half Mex, half American pimped-out Fender Strat, I can tell you that modding a Affinity is going to be fun, and you'll learn a lot, but it's not 100% worth it, unlike the Mex Fender. There's no comparison for me.

However... if your priority is comfort above all things, then I'd go for the Affinity. Doesn't sound to me like you're trying to get an "ultimate" Strat, but rather to learn your way and keep a cool hobby going. So go for it man.

Thanks for the tips, that's exactly what I meant... As I don't play really professionally and I aim local gigs a hyper strat would be a waste in my hands

Don't ever think that way of yourself, sir. You deserve a solid, stable, manly guitar that will help you flow with ease from gig to gig.
Crappy tiny frets, cheap tuners and a barrel-bottom trem unit will not do that for you in the long-term.

I suggest that you go to a local store and try ****loads of everything, from the cheapest Squier Bullets to the most expensive Fenders and also try the G&L Tribute series guitars.
G&L Tributes in particular are INSANELY good for their price, cheaper than Mexican Fenders and IMO just as good, if not better.

If you go Squier, play the guitar in question. There was a specific Affinity finish I wanted.... one was decent (I bought it) and two were not so great. Then again there are great MIMs and subpar MIMs too. Find one the plays great and feels comfortable, then mod from there.

okay, i'll do a research through local stores before buying anything... It makes sense for guitars to have variations... they're are manufactured by actual people, after all

Re: Squier Affinity or Fender Mexican which worth upgrade?

I upgraded a MIM and never really bonded with the neck

As said it felt thicker

The Affinity is thinner profile and can be had used well under a hundred bucks
You want feel as hesitant to gouge it out the way you want it

It won't have resale value anyways

My friend has several Squires he has nodded and gigs with
No one at the gig even asks if it's Mexican or Chinese

They just comment on his playing

And how loud he is

Re: Squier Affinity or Fender Mexican which worth upgrade?

Loud is important. Get whichever guitar is louder.

I was tempted to disagree with that statement, but when I thought about it, there is not a single thing wrong with what you have said. Van Halen had a loud guitar and he's famous, my neighbor Ed has a quiet guitar and you've never heard of him.

And they are both Eds
