Hi guys,

I need you suggestion to choose some singles for my new guitar.

This guitar will be made by mahogany body, brazilian rosewood neck and maple top. It'll have a floyd rose bridge and a TB-12 George Lynch Screaming Demon as bridge pickup.

I would like you suggestion for a pair of singles for this guitar.
My requirements are:
1 - Hum canceling;
2 - A SRV like sound;
3 - Work well with the demon.

What would you guys suggest?

Thanks for your help on it.

Cheers,

Ivo

Re: SRV Sounds + Screaming Deamon

I believe you are looking for a middle and a neck. I think you can go with a STK-S4 Classic Stack Plus in the middle and STK-S2 Hot Stack in the neck.

Re: SRV Sounds + Screaming Deamon

Yup, the Classic Stack Plus is what you want in the neck and middle. I have this exact setup (without the Floyd though) on a Strat and they sound great. Those Classic Stack Plueses match well with the Demon. I recommend using a 250k volume pot. Everything will sound sweet.

Re: SRV Sounds + Screaming Deamon

I tried a Classic Stack on my HSS guitar in middle and neck position, they have a wonderful sound, deep and high gain... but definitely do not have a "SRV" Strat sound, even they have very little Fender Single Coil character
If you want to sound like SRV buy some Texas Special pickups, and forget the hum issue

Re: SRV Sounds + Screaming Deamon

the old classic stack is a cool pup but not the same as the new classic stack plus.

you want a pair of classic stack plus for the neck and middle like gunner and erik said. they have classic fender tone but no hum. great pups. of course sounding like srv is also about heavy strings tuned down, big clean amps, and bear paws for hands

Re: SRV Sounds + Screaming Deamon

Honestly, SRV sounded to me like P-90's. I know he used strats with hotter singles, 11's tuned down, etc...

But honestly I think SRV is pretty easy with a P-90. How about Phat Cats?

I know - the noise. That's too bad. Phat Cat + 500k - Bam!

Re: SRV Sounds + Screaming Deamon

actually srv used really low output single coils. all that beef came from tuning down with heavy strings and big amps turned up

Re: SRV Sounds + Screaming Deamon

Still sounds like P-90's to me. I rip Pride and Joy on my little Pro Jr. with a Custom p-90 bridge...SRV all over the place!

Re: SRV Sounds + Screaming Deamon

The Seymour Duncan tone chart comparison describes de SSL-5 true Single Coil as "SRV tone". I also read there is a new Stak Plus equivalent for that.

Re: SRV Sounds + Screaming Deamon

Dimarzios, SDs or Kinmans would all probably do the trick but - you're using a mahogany body, brazillian rosewood neck and a Floyd. It will have just as much effect as the pickups on your chances to get the SRV tone.

Not saying that you won't be able to pull it off - you sometimes find guitars that have nothing in common with a Strat but still sound SRV'ish (or players that can make them sound that way). All I'm saying is that if it won't sound like his tone - don't blame the pickups.

Re: SRV Sounds + Screaming Deamon

Two Classic Stack Plus in neck and middle match well with the Demon in bridge. That's what my main guitar has in it and it covers the sounds you're talking about really well. Mahogany is bound to warm the tone up a bit and I'll +1 to Erik's suggestion of 250k pots

Here's an example of em in an alder guitar:

Hi Gunner,

Thanks for your answer, you really made this pickups sound SRV! I believe that I'll go for it.

By the way, I heard all your tunes and they are really great! Nice job!

Thanks you all for your thoughts about this subject!

Best regards,

Ivo

Re: SRV Sounds + Screaming Deamon

I used to wonder why i could not get close to the SRV sound with my noise cancelling pickups. Unfortunately, with the greatest respect to Mr. Duncan (and many others),manufaturers have been wrestling with the idea of a hum cancelling pickup that sounds like a true single coil - it hasn't been done yet.
May i recommend trying some real single coils like texas specials, fralin blues or some Antiquity Surfers....you will learn to live with the hum because they sound so much more present and harmonically rich than hum cancelling pickups. You wont regret it.
