Man, it's been years since I played a Fat 50. What I can tell you is that the SSL-1 in the neck of a strat is very, very glassy and clear. Vintage sound in spades. It's a tad brighter than I remember the Fat 50 and certainly brighter than say an APS. If you want all of the bell like tones and bright, vintage fender sound then it's hard to go wrong with the SSL-1. I have just always found the SD pickups to be more organic and complementary to the tone of your guitar than say Fender pickups or Dimarzio's.

Opinions are like noses, and everyone has one, but that's mine. Sorry I couldn't remember more about the Fat 50's...it's literally been 8-9 years since I played them.

i had them in the neck and bridge of my alder/rosewood strat for a while, and liked them. but to my ears they have a pronounced mid-range that i couldn't get used to. i am extremely picky about mids. they are great pickups, very full sounding while still sounding stratty. i like the ssl-1's much better.
